Painting reflectors?

Red Dragons!
I just got a pair of Lumenarc 3 reflectors for my new tank. I will not be running a canopy so I want to paint the outside of the reflectors black as the tank trim and stand are black. Would just regular high temp spray paint work? TIA

It will not. The surface you will be spraying is aluminum, you must prep the surface VERY WELL, then use a SELF-ETCHING primer. If you don't use self etching primer, it will fall right the heck off.

After that, shoot your base over it, and you should be good to go.

But I must ask... How high off the water is this reflector going to be? I had mine WAY to close (spider) and it still spilled a wacko amount of light into the room. You couldn't even sit in the room with the thing. I know the lumenarc are a better design, but I'd imagine you still have to hang them to get good cover.

I'm now building a very easy and cheap canopy. :D

Is there not going to be alot of light spill? Mine was HORRIBLE, and I was only ~7" off the water. I had to completely re-engineer the whole, thing. :mad2: Just trying to save you some time. :D

BTW, do you own an Evo?

I hope not to have light spill but now you got me wondering, Thanks alot!

No EVO....yet

Someone else mentioned podwercoating it, but would that take the heat? I dont care what it gets painted with I just want it not to melt or anything.

Powdercoating would be ideal. And the process of powdercoating is completed with ~450* of oven temps to cure it. So it'll be fine. If it gets to 450* you've got alot more problems than your coating melting

I've got a Stage 3+ WRX. It's alot of fun. ;)

Will the reflector be damaged by the 450 degrees?

If I quit this hobby I could probably have a scooby in a few months. Sign me up for AA

I'm not sure on the construction of the Lumenarc, but I'd put my Spider in there no questions asked. The only thing that could possibly happen to it is it would warp. But I don't see that happening.

It's a 2003, Sonic Yellow. They only made 1500 of them painted this color. Here's a pic...
