Pairing butterfly fish

well i'm late to the party here and just started collecting BFs. i have 2 4" pyramids in one QT and 2 3" golden BF's in another.

i was thinking once out of QT, i might considering getting another 1 or 2 of each, but i guess just stick with pairs?

Mine eats mysis brine and a little flakes got my from a wholesaler I have them in qt right now.

can someone suggest another pr of butterflyfish for me to consider?

okay, i see LA now has the Pelewensis BFs... per LA.."difficult fish to feed", and they're small too.. while i rather med/large.

I am trying to pair my Indian Ocean Mertensii but so far, they hang out together but the bigger one will chase the smaller one a bit... Been like that for 1 week...

Thought I would update on the yellow long nose butterflies, since it's coming up on two years

I ended up also putting the larger one in the reef shortly after splitting them up by placing the smaller one in the reef. The larger one just didn't seem to be doing well in the FO once the smaller one was gone. Now, the "smaller one" is only barely so, and both are as large, or larger than the powder blue tang at this point! I think they are a pair. When just watching them from afar, with no stimuli from me (like walking near the tank, or feeding) they actually follow each other around the tank, usually between 6-12" away from each other. They will occasionally fin flare at each other during feeding, but otherwise they get long, so I'm fairly certain they are a pair.

My latest project. With the 240g being delivered this Tuesday I figured they could be cramped for a few weeks in the 110g. I've had the smaller one for a few years now (some of you may remember me trying him in my reef  ). When I added the large one, the smaller established one did these weird swimming moves around it... it didn't look like aggression. Frankly, it didn't look like anything I've seen before. That stopped after the first day, and there has been zero aggression since, so I'm hopeful!

So far, everything is going surprisingly well with the two saddlebacks! The larger one tried to eat HBH Spirulina pellets yesterday, so I'm hopeful to have him on pellets soon, so he can gain some weight (not that he's terribly thin or anything). Quick vid:

Very nice selection of b/f! btw do you put your b/f thrugh an entire copper and prazi treatment during QT? Ive tried several times to add a few b/f but they dont make it out of QT! I'm wondering if they cant resist cuppramine @ .50m

Yeah, I killed a few at first with 0.5mg/L. I don't dose that much anymore.

Curpamine, from the Seachem website:

" If the bottle has a dropper cap, use 20 drops (1 mL) per 40 L (10.5 gallons*) the first day, wait 48 hours, then repeat."

I do 1 drop per gallon on day 1, another 1 drop per gallon on day 3, and another 1 drop per 2 gallons on day 5. That's it.

No. The meredithis are very mellow, and the asfur is still on the small side. Maybe 4-5 inches.

Well that was a disaster. No interaction between the saddlebacks this entire time. Nothing. Then yesterday I come home from work to find the smaller one torn apart, colored dark brown, and hiding under a rock that I never thought it could fit under. He is now fine in QT. I've just come to accept, you cannot pair butterflies (truly pair, not just tolerate each other), long term.
