Pairing gone bad?

Hi all,

Here is a little background on my problem. I currently have a 125g gallon tank with live rock. No fish other than the two clowns. It has been with me for over 5 years. I had a pair of maroon gold stripe clowns for almost 5 years. I lost the female about 5 months ago and just recently decided to introduce a smaller maroon to the tank.

They hit if off immediately and there were no signs of aggression. For the first 2 days everything was smooth, then on the third day the larger clown was not eating. I noticed what looked like a scrape on his right side with slime over it. I caught him with a net and placed him in the divider, and noticed that the slime went away and there was a slight discoloration where the slime was. There was no open wound. The next day he died.

The new clown (smaller) is still alive and well, and I can't help but think that he must have transferred some disease to him. Although he does not show any signs of sickness.

Does anybody have any idea hat happened?

TIA

try looking up 'brook' thats a disease that kills over night and looks like shedding slimecoat...

but your new one would have been the culprit, dieing as well. unless you gave it formilin dip?

Strange indeed. did you qt the new one?
keep an eye on him for anything strange, qt immediately if he starts acting weird

Welcome screameleons, I've been drooling over your chams for a few years now.

As for the clowns, maybe it was a scrape that ended up getting infected???

Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick response. The little guy is still alive and thriving. It doesn't seem like anything is wrong with him. At the moment, he is the only fish in the tank now. I will research brooks. The thing that is throwing me off is that if the smaller clown had anything to do with it, he should be showing some signs as well. Right?

I also thought it might be a scrape at first, but when I placed him in the container, the scrape disappeared. It just looked like a spot that was slightly faded.

Hey Chris, let me know if you want to get into panthers. I noticed that many marine/reef hobbyist are also interested in panthers. If you can maintain a sw tank, the panthers will be a breeze. They really are unique creatures. I just uploaded a couple new photos and you can check them out here:
