pairing up maroons

I have a lovely misbar gold stripe maroon i would like to pair up.

i am curious what tips and tricks some of you can provide me to make this work. it is about 2.5-3 inchs long. iam also wanting to get a bta as when i got my clown it was being hosted and i feell bad from taking him away. should the second clown be introduced before or after the bta? I can see pros and cons either way but i would like to know from some pros.

I introduced my male maroon by putting him in a strawberry container with plastic wrap on top anchored to the side of the tank by fishing string. and lowered him every other day closer to the females territory. It only took 5 days for me to release him and they never fought.
He ended up jumping out due to a very agressive Blue Devil.

My 2 1/2 inch female was in the tank, established in her BTA. Tank is 20L. I cut a piece of eggcrate to act as a divider (male was 3/4 in and could easily fit through). I divided off a quarter of the tank and put the male on the 'safe' side. Did all my feeding on the female's side. about a week later they were all sorts of cuddly.

They seem to be prepping a flowerpot now. The male is sometimes allowed in the BTA.

how can i tell if i have a male or female?

If she is alone and over 2 inches, chances are she is female.

so i should get a smaller male then. that was onething i was wondering if i should get a smaller or larger maroon.

The smallest you can find. A baby is best.
