Part 1 question

I received part one last saturday and have been doing lots of water changes to keep the ammonia levels under control. Today, I noticed that the rock seems to be getting darker in color (brown). Maybe algae? I've had the light on about 8hrs. a day, which maybe too much. All the critters seem to be doing ok. Is this normal? Any input would be appreciated. BTW the rock looks great.

You have a bad test kit...get a new one with reagents in date.....it will be on the package.....

slow down on water changes, if your tank looks happy, it is happy...

you will cycle faster..

the learning curve is steeper than I thought and I have made mistakes. I, too, was doing too many water changes and worrying and fussing over that darn tank like a woman possesed. i've backed way off and the cycle is almost over. YEA!!

How do you know you've been doing too many water changes? What happened?

My tank also is almost done with the cycle and currently going through a brown diatom bloom. Everything is looking healthy but the tank is getting dirty from the bloom.

No need to change any water if the ammonia does not go over 1ppm....

The rusty color is part of the cycle, means you are almost there....

yep, I only changed water when it was over 1ppm...

Btw Richard I'm expecting to be ready for part 2 on July 14 or 15th.

I'll be out of town the 11th ,12th and 13th so I figured it would be better to do it when I get back.

I'll be in touch
