Patience pays off!

If you are new to the hobby and are like me, you are dying to get started ASAP. I was the same was 3 years ago. I couldn't wait to get fish and corals, and as such didn't do adequate research on the hobby. Take this piece of advice, stop, read, study, and do it right the first time.

I rushed it because I couldn't wait, and frankly, because patience is not a virtue I posses :headwally: I started my first tank 3 years ago and then last year upgraded tanks. Trust me, take your time and enjoy the process!

I just spent the last two days completely tearing down my sump and electrical and replacing cheap, broken parts. Take your time, do the research, save the money on QUALITY equipment, and you'll love this hobby much more! Just my $.02

And having to re-buy equipment because you got in a hurry to have a tank instead of saving for the tank you really want---real pain. It's rare that you can sell equipment for anything like what it cost. Save up and buy the RIGHT pieces. And buy good equipment and get your water spot-on in ALL EIGHT parameters [nitrate, nitrate, ammonia, salinity, temperature, magnesium, alkalinity, calcium] before you lay out money for fish and corals.

When buying equipment, you have two options.

1. Cuss once (good equipment)
2. Cuss several times (less than good equipment)

This has guided me for years and years.

Do the research, buy good stuff, be CAREFUL about what you put in your tank, don't fall for the latest fads, and take your time.

It's a hobby. The definition of hobby is "an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure". If you don't enjoy spending your time with your tank, what are you doing it for?
