Wow great pic Beerguy! Now I need to go on the hunt! I have the same lens as you do and wonder if I can get half as good. :D

Did you use the extension on this shot? I don't want to hijack the thread here so I left you a question over on the other thread.

Very nice. I like how clear the mouth appears on your shot.
Here are a couple of shots I took for those a while ago. Don't remember if I used only extension tubes or extension tubes and reversing ring.

This one displays a weird "vasculature" appearance that I never saw except on this one.

I'll answer your other question here. The lounge rats don't care about extension tubes. ;)

This star was taken with just the lens. I used a full Kenko set on the poppy shots. Extension tubes are just spacers. They contain no optics, just a lens mount and connectors to pass the electrical connection through.

What they do is shorten your working distance giving higher magnification. The set that I mentioned is three spaces of different sizes that you can stack together if desired. You loose the ability to focus on objects in the distance and there is some light loss as well so you need to compensate with shutter speed or ISO.

The nice thing about them is that they're inexpensive and a quick way to increase the magnification of just about any lens. If I'm out hiking with my gear there's a limit to how much stuff I can comfortably carry. I generally leave the 100 macro in the car and just through the tubes in my pocket. If I find a macro opportunity I just use my 24-70 or 100-400 with the tubes to get the magnification I want. On the 24-70 that's enough to get me close to 1:1 magnification.

Cheers

Thanks for the explanation. I am ordering mine now! I have been wanting to get closer. So will this make my 100mm like as high as 168mm?

Thanks again.

No. It doesn't expand your focal length. It just shortens the working distance. The 100 2.8 has a minimum focusing distance of about one foot. Adding extension shortens that distance which results in higher magnification; i.e. a larger image on your sensor.

Rev, check out the Canon 250D and Canon 500D close up filters as well. They are phenomenal. I actually bought step-up rings to fit them on my Tamron 90mm, and together, its just plain silly how close you can get.

the extension rings are very nice as well, and part of my arsenal.
