Ok so I can home to seeing my Powder Brown Tang with some spots of what I beleive are ich. So I know that doing a Freshwater dip will help but just want to make sure I do it right, or if there are other options that I do them....

So with the FW dip do you have to use RODI water andthen bring the temp up to the tanks temp? I don't want to freeze my PBT's butt off so anybody with ideas and help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Josh

Do NOT do a Fresh water dip!!!!! They are extremely stressful and will not help with ich!!!!!!!! You need increased temp., hyposalinity, and cupramine to fight ich effectivly.

quarintine that fish now
PBT are one of my fav fish and ive owned a few and they get ich like i smoke cigs. hyposalinity works and if you cant quraintine mebee try uv steralizer and increase the temp
just remember that saltwater ich is more potent that freshwater however it only has a 24 hour ish lifesapn and then goes to the sand bed and then back to the fish attack the eggs first then the fish.

how do you attack the eggs first then?

Ok when setting up this QT tank, 20gal with a filter of somesort, then what add like 5 gallons of tank water and 15 of RODI water? will that work?

20 gallon no filter using tank water. Only add an airstone and heater to this tank. Filters are ineffective and will remove meds.

You can't just QT the one fish and think the ich will be gone from the main tank. ALL fish must be QT'd if you want to be sure the ich is gone and won't come back.

6 weeks minimum. 8 is best. The display needs to be fallow during this time or you wont be accomplishing anything.

wow this majorly blows! Looks like Iwill be seeing if I can store all my fish in my dads 100gal horse troph for a couple of months. Also looks like I will be tearing down my tank. I don't have to QT my shrimp and other inverts right? Just keep the display clean of any fish for 8 weeks? Then also do the fish NEED to be treated or just do a Hyposalinity drop?

Only the fish will need to be moved while the main tank is fishless for the 4-6 week minimum QT period. All you have to do is drop the salinity of the QT tank down to 1.009ppm salinity and keep it there for the 4-6 weeks. The ich will be killed.

I heard from someone that he keeps his actinic lights on 24 hrs/day because, he said, "ich is only active in the dark." Is there any truth to that?

He also used a UV sterilizer on his display tank and felt that helped a lot.

No to both. UV will probably kill SOME of the swimming trophonts but will not kill all and will certainly not kill the eggs or the ich living on the fish or in the sand.

ok so can I use a big rubbermaid for a QT tank?

And do you start with normal (1.022) slainity and then slowly drop it, or just start down at the 1.009?

You can use that but you need to have some type of biological filter like an air driven sponge filter. If you are just starting it then you should assume it will go thru a cycle just like any other salt tank. You should start out at your normal salinity and then drop from there.
