pc lighting

ok i just got a 48" 4x65w power compact fixture for my 55g. it has 2 double bulbed 10000k white/ 6700k pc bulbs- 2 double bulbed 7100k blue/ actinic 03 bulbs- and 2 moonlights. my question is....what clams would be ok with this lighting and how close to the top should i put them

You would probably be ok with a derasa or hippopus clam. I personally wouldn't do a squamosa, and no way with a maxima or crocea. Just make sure all your fish are clam compatible and your chemistry apropriate.

I have a durasa under the same lighting you have, in the same size tank you have and he's doing great!

Not sure why Peabody said not the Squamosa, But my Squamosa has grown great with my PC, been in tank for 4-5 years...And if you look around you can find some nice colors as well....

myakkareef...I've seen them be hit or miss, with the miss not being death, but poor growth or coloration. Looks like you have a great clam!

sorry to disagree but i have 2 maxis and 2 crocea under PC and have had them for years with the exception of the new maxi,great color good growth,older maxi has more than doubled its size

I'll be the first to admit that it can be done, but from what I've seen, the odds are not even close to favorable. You're a lucky guy to have some that have adjusted!

great so i have four people telling me they'll all do fine and one saying dont try squamosa, maximas, or croceas lol. i dont know about the whole " you need mh vho or at least t5's to keep sps and clams". because everyone that says that always does infact have one of those but not pc's. but a whole bunch of people pop up and say they dont actually know anyone whos pc lights alone killed a coral or clam. and that they own them under pc's and they are doing fine. honestly im starting to think that those 3 really arent that much better then pc's. i just think people need to feel cool and say ive got mh's. and no matter what you have, rather it be pc's or mh's, its still simply not the sun.

ive had maximas,croceas,squamosas and derasas under pc,s and i must say they would be very much happier with MH. from what ive learned over the years i would only put derasa's or hippopus under pc now

Xdusty6920: It has nothing to do with "I have MH and you don't" I tried clams under PCs...it didn't work well at all! I've had friends do it....most died. 96w over a 10 gallon, 4x65 over a 55 gallon, etc. What do you expect me to say? "Go ahead and do it you would be just fine"? Stick with the lower light clams like derasa.

How high up in the tank do you recommend placing a clam? I have a 45 Gallon which is 24" high and the lights which are 3 36" strips of PC (one 10,000K, one Actinic, and one 50/50) are another 4" off the top of the tank in a hood. Thanks in advance guys.

Place it as high as you can and see how it looks.

My first available spot may be about 14"-15" below the lights. Is it even worth me going out an purchasing a clam, only to have it degrade slowly because of lack of adequate light?

Well, you have VHO so that's good. WIth derasa or squamosa you should be fine!
