Pee smell

Hey reefers,

So I topped up my ATO container today, it's a 35g brute can with a lid. When I took the lid off it smelt like cat pee.

I tested for ammonia and nothing. TDS is at 3. It's RO /Di water so I'm not sure what's up with it.

Any ideas?

Was there any leftover salt/saltwater from your last change? I ran into the same thing as far as the TDS reading. Test the RODI water itself (let it pour into a cup) instead of what is in the Brute can to see if your filters need changing.
As far as the pee smell, I am not sure.

just out of curiosity do you have a cat???

I had a similar situation a few years ago and my cat decided the bucket of extra sand I had made for a nice litter box.

That's completely normal for brute cans that store rodi water. It's safe to use the water, add prime once mixed if you need peace of mind. Just clean it when empty

I assume you mean your TDS is .003. I will let mine got to .001 for a few gallons before I change DI to get it back down to .000. That is just my personal preference.

I do have a cat but he's outside 95% of the time. Also the cover is always on my ATO resivoir and the smell definitely comes from the inside.

As my my RODI unit all filters are new and get 0 TDS at the outlet.

Guess it's just due for a cleaning. Haven't cleaned it since the day I got it, about 3 months.

I though it might be normal just thought I would ask.

Do you have a powerhead in the trashcan to circulate the water? If you don't the water will become a stagnant smell.

No I don't but will add one. I have 4 800gph brand new power heads sitting in a box that I'm not using.

As mentioned earlier, this is the Brute can smell w/ still water. Happens in all my Brutes with fresh or salt water. The only one that has a different smell is my waste water container because it has tank bacteria--so has a sort of sulfur smell from the anaerobic conditions.

Should add that this has never caused an issue for me and I haven't cleaned them out either. I do swap out my NSW Brute every few months for cleaning because it actually grows a black mildew that annoys me.

I had the same problem. I put in a powerhead to circulate the water (make sure to agitate the surface), and the smell will go away. At least it did for me.

oops.. sorry bout that.. I wondered whos lawn I passed out in.. Canada is a beautiful place.. even through beer goggles.. :)

I am a habs fan, only cause I like to cheer for the better team!

After all they're Canadian and we did just win the World Cup! [emoji12]

The only way you would have beer goggles is if you've been drinking Canadian beer!

What do canoes and American beer have in common?

They're both so damn close to water![emoji12]
