peeling skin

My yellow tank had a half a dime size piece of skin start to peel off two days ago. When checking on him last night the skin continued to peel and you can see some bruising (red marks) under the skin and you can see a reflectice layer outside of the muscle. He continues to seem healthy eating and swimming around the tank. Is this possibly a bacterial infection or is it likley that he was spooked and ran into rockwork?

I hope your description is that the outer layers, maybe the mucous layers, of the fish's 'skin' are shedding. This would make sense with a bacterial infection, either surface or systemic.

It could have started from an injury, water conditions, environment, or poor nutrition. It's sort of up to you to investigate all these possibilities.

For curing the fish, moving it to a hospital tank and treating with an antibiotic that is good for systemic conditions as well as external infections would be my choice. I'd use both Maracyn One for Saltwater fishes AND Maracyn Two for Saltwater fishes at the same time. Do a double dose of Maracyn Two at the outset, then follow directions given with the meds.

Good luck!

nope not the outlayer....wish it was...very gross to look at and i feel real bad for him. His yellow layer is peeled back and you can see lots of bruising under his skin. I'm dosing the tank with stress coat and melaflex (if it is a bacterial infection). I know its was not caused from water condidtions all things have been the same for several months----maintenence inluded. Only additions to the tanks was a small frag that might have transfered a disease? would like to somehow get him out of the tank but feel that will cause way too much extra stress.

Well as of today he seems lathargic but continues to eat and swim around the tank. There seems to be a layer forming (hopefully healing) where the loss of skin is after two days of treatment. My hopes are up for him/ hope he pulls through!
