This morning the carpet anemone was very large and looked very well.I had then noticed that the anemone was moveing(I dont like moving anemones).I didnt think much of it but wanted to find out why he was moveing.I then find out that the anemone had some foot dameage when the Peppermit Shrimp had pulled white stringy stuff out of his foot. The Shrimp seemed to do this 3 to 4 times. My question is that will a Peppermit shrimp do this commonly or was this just a by chance thing? Also Iv already been credited for the anemone and would feel bad if it pulled through. Is there any chances of it pulling through? The anemone has deflated even more and has detached his foot and is laying on the sand bed? What should I do?

THANK YOU ALL,
AUSTIN

How new was the Haddoni? Was the foot buried in the sandbed? (( wondering how the peppermint got to it )).

In my experiences with Peps and haddonis, they won't touch a healthy one, but will sure go after a damaged/unhealthy/newly introduced one. The newly introduced and damaged ones were able to settle in/recover so that the pep left them alone.

the anemone was farily new only a weekand a half old in my tank.the anemone was moveing and the foot was partaily exposed.

That is a tough one. It could be that the Haddoni was going downhill already and the pep took advantage of that. I have had Haddonis that look great one minute and then 5 minutes later look awful.

Has it been moving prior to this? Has the month been tightly closed?

But, for now I would do my best to get the pep out of there -- won't guarantee the that Haddoni will make it, but will help.

I agree with Todd. Normally a pep would be lunch for a healthy haddoni, not the other way around. Must have been sick already.

well the anemones foot is not going to bring food into its mouth so how could it eat it if the foot is not sticky?

The foot of the anemone does not feed the anemone! The foot holds down the anemone to stop if from floating around! Im thinking that the anemone was on its way out to begin w/. You must have some nice peps at your lfs for crediting your $ back! Good luck

well the anemone seems to be looking much better now.hes about 7 to 8 inches across.i looked at the foot and i was wrong the anemone had no foot damage.the shrimp seemed to take something out of its foot but to really be takeing food under neath the foot.the anemone did have very small foot damage but that now seems to be "melting" together again.

peppermint shrimp/anemone

peppermint shrimp/anemone

My peppermint shrimp will not only steal food from my bubble tips, but if he doesn't get it from their tentacles, he will wait until hes hungry enough and poke a hole in the foot and eat the food right out of their stomachs. It sounds like yours is doing the same thing. It is a pretty vicious cycle in my tank that I just figured out. I was feeding my anemone, but he was never getting any nutrients b/c when I am gone the shrimp does this and the poor anemone gives up and throws up his food early. Then the food falls somewhere I cant see and pollutes my water.
I am in the process of trying to catch my shrimp now. It will only be a matter of days before he is in quarantine until a new home can be found.
I will never have a peppermint shrimp in a reef tank ever again

I have seen it more often in LTAs, but once in a while with my Haddonis. There is a string of slime (( for lack of a better term )) that will sometime form by the foot. It is noticeable when they move (( again it isn't always there )), it will be coming from around the foot, but not from the foot itself --- if that makes sense. So a pep eating/pulling on that could very well look like it was pulling something from inside the foot.

peppermint shrimp are known to eat aiptasia anenomes so if none are available they will eat the next best thing anenomes of any discription but i don't think one little guy can kill a large anenome fast !

When I first got my Cleaner Shrimps, they did the "Food War" with my Sebae... I mean they would literally get on top of the anem and steal the food from its mouth. Now, when it's anemone feeding time, the shrimp, arrow crab and anem all get fed at the same time to keep the thieves busy.
