Hello,

About a week and a half ago I put three pepperment shrimp in my 130 gal tank. I have not seen them since. I currently have the following inhabitants, do you think any of these are shrimp eaters or are they just hiding in the rock?

3 lyretail anthial
1 true percula clown
1 helfrichi firefish
1 neon goby

several hermit crabs
1 mythrix crab
several zebra crabs

mine were gone the first day. later saw legs floating around. 2 weeks later found both of them. Must have molted. Still very elusive and see only about once a week.Aptasia disappearing however!

You might sneek up on the tank at night with a flashlight. That usually when my shrimp are out and about.

peppermints are very shy, try looking behind your rocks at night with a red light. You can accomplish this by putting some red film (plastic from a craft store) over a flashlight. Most likely they are just bunked up deep in your rockwork.

They're propably in there as others have said. Nothing in your list should have bothered or eatten them.

I had one in my 90 and it could only be found with a flash light at night. It was even harder to get it out when I found out it was eatting my Zoas. And yes it was a peppermint and not a camel. Good luck with your shrimp.

Mine was eatting the tips of the lashes off of my Zoas and my Yellow Polyps. The looked real sick looking. About a few weeks after the bugger was removed, the started to recover. From what I read, mine was a rare case. I just won't risk it again.

I found out what ate mine!!

I found out what ate mine!!

I had two Peppermint Shrimps that went missing and I was told that they just hide and mostly come out at night. I bought two more and when I was putting the first one in the display tank I found out that Nassarius Snails eat them.

The Dottyback took it's turn also.

I had some aiptasia several months ago and bought two. They took care of the aiptasia. I would see them out and about very occasionally for a couple of weeks, then, after that, I just never saw them again even at night.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to drain my tank to work on a bulkhead on the tank bottom. When I pulled out my last piece of rock before draining the tank, I found one of them hiding behind it. He looked to be doing fine. I finished the work, put the rock back, filled up the tank again and put him back. Haven't seen him since.

When I put the Peppermint Shrimp into the tank it danced around a bit and set down on the sand bed when one of the snails came up out of the sand bed and crawled up on its back and held it down. The shrimp did'nt have a chance.

It had to be a sick shrimp or shock from the acclimation. I have had 2 peppermint shrimp in my tank now for about 8 months. Granted, I added 5 originally. I have nassarius snails as well. Both the normal smaller ones and the "jumbo tonga" nassarius, as Dr. Foster and Smith call them, that you appear to have. I also have a flame angel, orchid dottyback, gold striped maroon clown and a six-line wrasse. They come out when I feed every time. They live with the maroon clown, so maybe they are protected. One is always carrying eggs under the swimmerettes or whatever they are called.

Awww man, are you serious? Nass snails eat peppermints? I have a few nass and the last 2 peppermints I put in were never seen after the first day, maybe that's why.

My peps are always out. They even crawl up my arm when my hand in is the tank.

You should check your sump. I've have 2 peps go down my overflows and wind up in the filter sock. They survived both times with all the eggs in tact.

How quick are they at eating Aptasia? How many would you suggest for a 55 w/ about 10 small Aptasia?

Thanks,
JB

I have had nass snails in my tank with peppermint shrimp for 2 years and have never had a problem. I believe his peppermint shrimp must have already been struggling or not in good health.

We have a 29Gal, added two pepermints about the fourth night all the aptasia disapeared... seems it took them a few nights to adjust.

Ours now come out during the day some, especially at feeding.

Thanks. I think I'll try 2 to start. I only have a few so I hope they take care of them and any others that pop up.
