When I get my new fish in the tank I will snap some images and upload them. Still stuck on what to do next.

The tank has been cleaned out quite a bit and has about 2 - 3 fish left in it. I want to change it to a deepsea tank with fish caught at 150+ feet. Due to the financial aspect of keeping a tank like that I have sold off most of my stock and will only have that tank.

Peppermint is on my wish list! I have 2 friends who are certified in trimix and heliox to do really deepsea diving and have thought about asking them to collect what they can for me.

I just have to be patient.

My understanding is this. When they were originally id'ed and caught quite a number were caught. I have seen a scanned photo of Richard Pyles office tank containing a number of boylei, and a narcosis. Quite a lot of these fish were sold (guess 10?) but all went to Japan.

After that there may or may not have been any more caught by commercial fishers . but not many as despite the high unit cost the overall expidition does not make sense. The only fish in captivity were those in Japan, and they died of old age till there was only one left (remainder of a pair). Most photos you see are of these 'first gen' fish - new photos did not exist till last year.

Last year they were sighted and filmed at several locations, and two were caught - one to Waikiki, one to Japan, so the total tank population worldwide is two or three, depending on the status of the two fish (one of which is old) in Japan.

Despite the high unit cost it is hard to make the capture of these fishprofitable. I do not believe that anyone is doing it 'on the quiet'. They are not legally sensitive. The fact they are on a wholesaler list is irrelevant - they are on the same list, with the same photo and the same statues in DeJongs in the Netherlands.

FWIW there was an attempt to get an expedition together a few years ago to collect these, for a much more reasonable number. While plenty of people are willing to say 'Yah I'd get one no thinking for 5K', in reality this did not happen as people would not pay upfront. Expensive angels (>2K) tend to sit a long time between sales.

I've been hearing for years that De Jong is getting in 4 boylei's, because someone ordered them. We all know who, but I don't believe he's ever going to get close to any boylei.

Most expensive angelfish don't sit for a long time. The ones that end up in lfs do, but 90% will be sold even before they reach the wholesaler. For instance the two clarions that came in last week, they were sold in a matter of days.

are you a distributor or similar? to have all those rare fish pass through your tank? why did you get rid of them? they all are really nice fish.

I understand from my rare fish guys in HK that a number of the "first gen" fish (3-5) ended up in HK and did not sell. "No one wanted them" they said. At that time they were around $5K...

@ Wayne in Norway. I thought that it was only 1 that was caught. Do you perhaps have that photo so we can have a look? How did it go under the radar though? Were there 10 mentioned publically or was it an under the rug thing?
So there are 2 in captivity one personally owned in Japan and the other is at the Waikiki aquarium. What do you think the cost will be to have someone go down and collect them? If they are able to be collected in such a wide spread area is it possible that these fish are fairly easy to collect at those depths? Or are there a handful?
The photo that DeJongs has and the one from Daichii are different. I know which one DeJongs has it is the same as Marine Gardens Inc.
I would definitely be interested in that expedition, I know the costs would be extremely high but if it could work it would of great benefit to a lot of passionate and educated hobbyists. If it would be at $ 5k I would definitely take one considering that the current price range is between $ 12k - $ 30k.

Rare fish get snapped up rather quickly, the narcosis that was caught was snapped up in like a day on Liveaquaria’s DD.
@ Curious George. Ill give you glimpse of some of my new stuff arriving next week!!! It will be in my holding tanks for a while before they go into my main tank.

No one remembers, but we're all laughing about it now. I would have taken them all if I had been as linked in there at that time as I am today.

DeJong had them for sale on pre order basis, price was not too high.
At the end, as far as i know, non arrived.

Getting them is very simple, pick up the phone, call Rufus, name the price and you have them, as long as you have deep enough pockets.

If the fish going price as he says is 30K, Rufus will make money for you.
I doubt that it the price though, not even half of it.

HK have some fish that wont sale.
Rare Trigger fish for example.

Boyeli will fetch much more than 5 grands in HK these days.

I agree re the price. The Mainlanders would buy them up at stupid prices (seeing that with even basic fish that are remotely "rare"). What I find interesting is that there tons of great, rare fish in Mongkok and as you said none are moving. But 35-40 cm grey angels blow out like crazy!

The large Pomacanthus spp. were always an attraction.
I never understood why they like fish 12" and up, but that's HK, and it's not that they have large enough tanks to house them.

If any Boylei will come to HK, it wont last for going to the mainland, there are some hard core HKers hobbyist waiting for one to show up.

The hobby is dynamic and changing through the years, if a boylei would not sell in HK for 5 grands , as you said, now it will probably fetch much more.

There were the days when shipments from Ascension Island were coming to HK with Centropyge resplendens for about US$200,00 and they were hard to sell, cause all you got in the shipment was one fish, they had to order many.

There are people willing to pay 30k per fish for years and no boylei has ever gotten close to europe. Yeah sure it's not an easy trip, but it's not impossible either.

A couple of years a go when Arie was booking pre orders for Boylei the price was 6500.00 euro .

I'm not sure where you get the figures of 30K per fish.

I think you should contact Arie and tell him you got 5 people who are willing to pay 30K, that's 150K and pay some deposit, i'm ready to bet he will get you some fish.
