Peppermint shrimp Experiences??

hey guys,

i have an aptasia outbreak,, not totally out of control but i want to beat it before it gets bad. Unfortunatly my copperband that i had inherited when i bought my tank had died from the move so i have tried two other copperbands that were both very small and obviusly just wouldnt start eating for me. With that said ive decided it might be good to try some peppermint shrimp but i have read nightmare stories of them eating corals?? anyone have any experience? i ordered 6 for my tank.. one or two i will put in my sump. They are true peppermints from LA

Thanks,

I had 2 aptasia come in on a piece of rock about 4 years ago. I put 3 peps in the tank and pow, both were gone. Never had one come back since.

Maybe I just didnt have enough of them in my tank. I have one for a 110 gallon. I didnt want too many as I already have a cleaner and coral banded shrimp.

i got 6 on the way i just dont want to go around catching them( impossible in a 300 gallon tank to catch anything) if they start eating my darn corals.

I bought a few from drs foster and smith a while back. They did a number on both my aptasia and my acans. I didn't believe it was the shrimp causing the acan death till I hit them with the red light at night catching them in the act with fat bellies of expensive corals

They dont eat the acans, they just shred them up trying to get the food out from inside them. Kalk paste is still the best method IMO.

Ted, Whats new brother? i havent heard form you in along time..how are the tanks? kids?

i agree kalk paste is the best, but its a never ending process with the paste IMO.. ill be making kalk paste every weekend for a few years..once again the downfall to a large tank as alot of you know..although im in between a rock and a hard place beacsue im sure these shrimp wont be easy to catch either...What to do..

First you have to make sure you get the aptasia eating peppermint shrimp I believe they are from the Caribbean. I got 4 to clean up my 100 lbs of live rock that was covered in aptasia. I had to hit the big ones with aptasia X because they would not bother with the big ones but in about a month they took care of all of them. I dont have them in my main tank I did have one go bad years ago and tore apart a frogspawn so dont think I would be able to trust another one in my DT. Good luck!

I had 2 peppermints in a nano a while back for aiptasia and they definately cleared it out fast, almost as fast as the coral in my tank...zoas, duncans, torch..etc. just my experience

If the shrimp become an issue put a splendid dottyback in there, that will take care of peppermint shrimp in no time.

Why dont you take out the affected rocks and have them eat off them. Kinda like a a QT tank.

i wish i could the rocks in my tank are gigantic and covered in attached sps ..i would need a 120 to put them in to do that so i cant do that unfortunatly..

2turtles..thanks for the suggestion..that would be easier!!! ill def keep that in mind

all is well over here... if you want the 2 i have in my tank i can try and catch them. i know they eat aptasia and fast!! i planned on putting them in the other tank but the hamlet and grouper took out the last half dozen i put in with them in about .8 seconds, even tho i added them at night lol

Ted,

How's the hamlet doing? I miss that fish he is gorgeous! I got 6 peppermints coming tomorrow from LA but thanks. I'm crossing my fingers at this point .

Joe,

I saw that thread but for the $300 bucks I would have to spend on the laser I could get the 25 recommended burghia nudibraches for my tank ya know? Plus I have 3/4 in starfire glass on my tank who knows if it would magnify the laser to the point of trouble or deflect it with glass that thick. I also don't have the steadiest of hands haha
