Peppermint shrimp pregnant...

Hello everyone,

My name is William, I've been on RC for a while but I haven't really had anything interesting to post until now; I've really just been taking in all of the great information on this site. Thanks for all you guys do for the hobby!!

So, down to business, or my questions...

I have two peppermint shrimp in my tank and one appears to have eggs all around its lower tail area, the real name starts with a "P" I think but It escapes my memory. So my question is, if they get fertilized by the other shrimp, what will their chances of survival be if I don't harvest them and put them in some kind of larvae breeding tank? I don't have any fish in the tank yet, just the two shrimp, some hermits and snails. I assume that I won't be around when they are released, so the filter will probably do some damage on them.

I've never had any dealings with shrimp larvae before so this is new to me. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello William and Welcome to Reef Central!

You have basically no chance of raising them in an aquarium, BUT on the bright side, the newly hatched eggs will feed your fish and corals and they will love them.

You can do some Google search and here as well on trying to raise Peppermint shrimp. From the way that I understand it is the larvae are basically in the water column and have specific micro plankton that they feed on. You would also have to have a special made tank which is round with no corners to keep them alive. Kind of like if you wanted to keep jellyfish.

That's about all I can offer and if you find out anything in your searches please by all means post it here.

That's what I thought. I would like to raise them but I don't have time to set up a tank like that. So free food it is then! If I find anything interesting, I will post it. Thanks for the answers!!

One of my cleaner shrimp used to have eggs every other week basically. My clownfish would sense the hatching approaching and would just hover next to the mom and pick off every shrimp that hatched. That is of course if the cleaner shrimp herself didn't grab them and eat them.
