Peppermint Shrimp??

Hello

Was wondering what is the pro's and con's of having peppermeint shrimp in my tank to help get rid of some Aiptasia.
I've been reading how they will eat alot of other stuff too. I've been using the old heavy kalk mix injection method, but kind of hard to move about in the tank to inject them. And also not to over do it, to prevent ph spike.

Peps eat aiptasia; it's a fact. Whether or not they will do so in your tank will be based on how much you feed your fish and corals. IF they can eat better fair like left over food they will leave aiptasia alone, however, if you cut back a bit on your feedings, when they get hungry they will eat aiptasia.

That's why they are "hit and miss" with some...

they will do a decent job of keeping aiptasia under control as long as there isnt a lot of other food the could be eating on. There are two different species of shrimp labeled "peppermint shrimp" in stores as well, only one does a really good job of keeping aiptasia under control. for the life of me I can not find the name of the one does a good job, so this thread may be of no help. but my 2 cents have been thrown in.

It is also important that the peps are free to roam the tank. If you have aggressive fish that keep your shrimp from coming out of hiding, you may only have limited success with the peps.

FYI - many LFS will label Camel Shrimp as Peppermints.

Buy several of them if you choose to go that route. I only see mine at night (4 of them) they seem to roam in packs, maybe for security, who knows but when I only had one I never saw it.

Mine is quite a character and took care of my aiptasia within a week or so. I only have a 20g tank though, so he didn't have much to eat.

I have at least a dozen in my 90 gallon with only small reef safe fish. They are out all the time in little packs and they eat aptasia as long as I don't feed too much.

Be careful that you are not sold Camel Shrimp. These guys are reportedly not reef safe. My peppermint shrimp have kept my tank free of aptasia, however not sure I would have any even if no peppermint shrimp.

i have a 210g with 12 peps in the tank four in the overflows (2 in each) and eight in the sump. i might not be 100% free do to the fact they can live in the lines coming to and from your tank but it's nice not have to joe's juice them any more.
