PEPPIE's ODD-BALL BUILD

Thanks guys

SoFlo: I had approx. 50 to 60 hours in the wood working part of the build. It may have been done in less time if I didnt have to mill all the rough cut lumber. I dont know of any places that will sell the thicknesses I needed. I love the rich color of this Mahogany.

Thanks delmo,
I am not sure my next project would fit this fourm. I have been thinking about a Coal Bucket. The logistics of building one out of wood is giving me a headache!! LOL

Very nice work! I'm sure you would have no problem building these kind of systems as a job. I would like to know more about that hand saw you used to cut the trim. I used to work far a contractor that was into japanese joinery and he had a couple saws that looked similar. Where do you buy them?

Thanks Crypsis,
I would love to build complete systems for a living. I'm afraid I would starve. LOL The liability and cost of materials would be a huge issue. Todays economy wouldnt help either.
You are right about the hand saw, it is a Japanese pull saw. They are very thin and razor sharp. They cut on the pull stroke, which makes it easier to control your cut. It leaves a very clean cut and a very narrow kerf because it is so thin.
You can find them at "Woodcraft" or "Rockler Woodworkig" There are many other places on the net. Search Japanese Hand saws.
The prices start around $30 and up

excellent build! wish I was half as crafty as you with wood! I suck at stands so bad that I just buy them. I have table saws and routers and all of the necessities for building something like that but I have no experience in it and I hate wasting cash on wood that I am just going to butcher. I need a guy like you in Sioux City to build me a stand and canopy.

Thanks for the kind word.
I started a long time ago experimenting with cheap pine. Over time I had the confidence to try my skills with some very high end wood.

Very few people will pay for highend pieces I like to create.

I try to set my goals high enough to achieve, but not to high as it would set me up for sure failure.

The problem I find with pine is its cheap to work with but it always seems to be so knotty and warped. So I end up going with higher end woods and I just destroy them. I need an old timer with some experience because my father does construction but nothing with lumber. Nobody to learn from.

I thought we could probably continue your nuicance debate over on your tank journal and not on mine Peppie!

Now keep off my tank journal. thanks

Oh thats a shame about your tank splitting a seal and wrecking your floor. Better luck with this build hey! :wavehand::lol2:

Glad to see my build(s) back up top.
Thanks for the bump
The tank didnt spill a drop of water on my hardwoods.
I was smart enough to do research and take the advise of experienced reefers that offered constructive criticism.

Just wondering what excuse you will come up with when your DIY stand causes your tank to fail. And it will fail!!

Feel free to let me know who rated your DIY stand for 2000lbs, I will be sure to look up this engineers credentials.

What a classless buffoon:jester:

Great build Peppie! Very well thought out system. Certainly not a fools design.
The stand and hood came out beautiful! I really like your choices of wood species and the way the grain contrast with each other. I'm a wood worker myself, it's nice finding a thread like this and following along. Not your typical slap together 2x4 and ply stand.
Well done!

Thanks so much PL.
My wife was in charge of the wood choice for the bulk of the build, I choose the trim and high-lights. I toned it down from a high contrast to a more subtle tone.
Not many threads here go into the details I provided (on the woodworking end). I knew there had to be a few out there that would truly appreciate the the patience and time involved.

Here is a little eye candy for you.
My wife said it was to busy for her, so I gave it to our daughter

Now that's beautiful craftsmanship! Ive been eye balling a huge slab of American Cherry at my local saw mill for some time now. I need to pull the trigger and go buy it. I plan on doing a similar type table. I started working on inlay a few years back and would love to inlay the cherry table top with a darker brazilian cherry and contrast it with mortised maple legs. Sort of Shaker style.

Thanks PL
I found a local saw mill thats like a treasure mind to me.
I found this Western Big Leaf Maple with very very nice figure thru-out the board.
He had a flitch of 16 boards 16'' wide 60'' long X 5/4
All but 4 of the inner boards had this wonderful tight figure.
Cost me $3 per bf LOL What a steal I have seen lesser boards go for over $25 per bf on the internet sights.
Dont let someone beat you to that slab!!!
