Hard to tell from pic but there appear to be pineapple sponges in the pic. Google that.

Nope! Pineapple sponges are good. They are a sign of good water quality. I had tons of them in my last tank but I prefer to keep them to a minimum in the DT. Let them go crazy in you overflow, sump and refugium if you want. They are like mini mechanically filters and should help keep the water more clear.
