pests

I found some yellow pests munching on my alien eyes yeaterday. I freshwater dipped them for 2 minutes hoping to get rid of them. Anyone know what I can do do remove every single one in my tank? I would prefer not to FW dip all my zoas sonce I would have to rip them off the rocks since they've already settled in. TIA

If they are the zoa eating nudis, I think FW dip is the only means to rid the polyps. You will also be able to manually remove them by picking them off with tweezers (wearing gloves !) - don't forget to look for the swirl of eggs too.
If they aren't nudis...I don't know. Any pics ?

no pics sorry, yeah they are nudis I think but they were really small. They were yellow with some black. Anything I can treat the water with or any fish/invert I can add that will eat them?

After my experience with flatworms and flatworm eating nudi, I would not recommend adding any new critter when you already have a problem in the tank. It would be best to remove the zoa colonies and put them in a QT tank to treat and watch them until they are clear of pests. It's much easier to get ahead of them in the QT tank. Checking them for nudis/eggs and doing FW dips as needed and keeping them in QT for two weeks after they look clear.
The July speaker, Dr. Ron Shimek will be able to tell you a lot about them and the timeline for QT, but I'm pretty sure they only eat zoas and if you take all your zoas out of the main tank the nudis will starve. After they are gone and the QT is complete, you can put them back into the main tank.
Do wear gloves when handling. The zoas and nudis that eat them are nasty toxic.
Dr. Ron has written articles on these, as have others. Good luck!

I searched all the rocks for the curlyQ egg strands, and only found some on the rock that I am holding for another reefer.

Hey minh In that thread you started you talked about what i quoted above. What do they look like do you or know where they might be some pics?

if they are attached to a rock take out the whole rock and hold the rock and dip just the zoas in the freshwater dip, dipping the whole rock tends to take out any pods or goodies so i just dip like the top of the rock where to zoas are.

you don't have to peel the zoas off, i think doing that and dipping them just may kill them.

thankfull i have yet to have any obvious nudis, i still dipped mine once when they seemed to be doing badly just in case, i don't know if the dip is what helped but they were fine again a week later.

the problem with that is the nudi's will go down and hide in and lay eggs in the where you might not be able to see them...pods are easy enough to replace...so I wouldn't stress over loseing a few in order to insure you are fully treating the real problem.

I have about 5 big rocks and a few smaller shelf rocks and I can't take any out because they are all attached and spreading on the rockwork. If I took 1 rock out it would riun my wole aquascape as they each rock has it's own part in keeping the aquascape togeather. I may be able to peel some of them off, but not all. My tank is perfectly heathy, I just have nudis. I could add a 6-line wrasse or something if it would be helpful, any fish/invert I add would be fine.

is there any chance that squirting freshwater on them while in the tank would work???

like take a baster and keep spraying fresh water on them?

i don't know if it would work?

Did we get a pic or description on those curlyQ egg sacks?

I have the bottom remains of an acro I cut off the concrete plug that is growing back, and have been getting these green strands that feel like hard plastic growing out of the plug into tight curls, I didn't think much off them until now and have been pulling them off out of the water. Figured they were some algae.

Freakin me out man!!!

Though, I havn't seen any pests.

Some guy claimed that he found a fish that ate nudis. You can find the thread here

Lilleah - I don't think squirting then with fresh water will work. The fresh water has to be around them long enough for them to let go. A little squirt probably won'd do much.

You may want to experience the excitement of reaquascaping. I change my aquascape 3-5 times a year. Adds interest to the tank to make some changes. Gives you a chance to do a good cleaning if you discover something that needs it. Also makes room for new corals. Weigh the consequences. The longer you wait to treat the more zoas you will loose.

I dipped all my zoas today prying them off the rocks with a razor blade. After 5 minutes I shook them off in the FW and put them back in. There were 2 large nudis with some babies on their backs and a few babies that fell off by themselves. Do I need to dip them again in a week or so? I'm pretty sure I got all of them. TIA

You will have good results if you follow the advice from Mucho.

"Dip every single colony every other day and swoosh them violently in an inverted position clockwise to counterclockwise motion."

Give his info. a good read in the link Reefugee posted above.

Best of luck to you.

I think I did mine for a month. The dip was less frequent towards the end. The reason why I did it for so long was so that I was sure that any eggs would have hatched and the hatchling died of starvation.

Well, it will be a pain to do that for so long but I guess I gotta do it if I want to be completley nudi free. I should have just dipped every zoa I bought before I ever put them in my tank. LFS need to stress the importance of dipping more.

It will be easier to manage if you have them in a QT tank. That way, any left in the main tank will die off because there are no zoas to eat and you won't be getting any new eggs there.
You won't be disturbing your main tank by removing stuff to do all the dips as well.

Yes, but the person buying the animal should research far more then just from the LFS ;)

I would take them all out and QT or you will never get rid of them. Check them at least every other day after dips for eggs and new hatchlings. Trust me I have dealt with them and you will lose every time if not done correctly.
