I'm bored....

Tell me what to do with $84.50 in store credits (for Pet Paradise in Pueblo)??

I have been bringing in my FW plants for store credits. I'll use the credit to buy SW supplies and possibly some livestock. I am still bringing in plants. I usually get about 8 dollars to 10 dollars a week but now it probably will be every other week... who knows?

I'll have a sump on the 30th and I will have Todd (racer69) drill my 29g.... WOOHOO! Other than that, my 29g is pretty bare aside from Skilter 250 that I will be using for circulation only. Sorry Scott (Aquaman2000), I won't be driving over it with my car :p

Well, amuse me with ideas what I'd need for my 29g :D
 
someone told me(actually a lot of people) I need test kits that I finally got today. So maybe some of those for good measure!!
 
Once we start getting your tank set up, you will find all kinds of things to buy from them. And I am not talking about livestock. You will need sand, rock, pumps, etc... You will also need fish food (not cheap for sw fish) and lighting. If you want a full reef with corals, you will need better test kits than the ones you have and different ones also.
 
If you keep your eyes out you can probably find someone with LR for sale cheaper than the store. As Todd said I would hang on to that credit, you will find all kinds of thing you want/need for the tank.
 
Todd, what brand of test kit are you talking about? I believe that I have Hagen, is that good enough? I know the kit I have will test Ca, GH, KH, pH, Iron, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and Phosphate. I think thats everything. I didn't look but I can double check :p

Oh! What kind of salt mix is sufficent for a reef tank? Instant Ocean? Or anything else? Or... or... or...? :D
 
Your test kit is good for saltwater it look's like you have the same thing's i have to test my water. A good salt to get is Seachem Reef salt I use it and love it it has all the thing's you will want in your reeftank. You dont want to use Instant Ocean (IO)
 
We don't want to get into the salt debate again. I have used IO for almost 4 years now, and I don't seem to have any problems.Randy Holmes Farley has used IO for years and he is the most respected chemist on Reef Central. I don't think it is a good idea to tell someone not to use something without giving a reason. All of these salts have to be tested and they each offer something to everyone. I use IO because it always mixes and tests the same. If you use a major brand and mix it properly, you will be fine.

As far as test kits go, the Hagen master kit you have will be fine for the basics like ph, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia, but you need to get better tests for Calcium, Alkalinity, phosphate, and Magnesium. One of the better tests at a decent price is Salifert. I also have the Hagen master kit with the same tests, and the ca, alk, and phos are not accurate when compared to other kits and are hard to read properly.
 
So IO is good stuff, and I use to use it as well. I am now using Seachem Reef Salt, but most brands (except TM I believe) start with IO, as the base salt and then add stuff to it.


Here is what Scott posed about Seachem, IO, and TM a while back.

"I spoke with the Seachem rep a few days ago, and this is what he told me. There is a lot of propaganda about salt, which one does what, which one is better and so on. After 3 years of testing every salt base in the world, Instant Ocean is the best base salt on the market period. What you add to it is what makes the difference.

Seachem, you may not know uses the IO base salt, and then mixes there own from there and has two salt mixes. The one we know about is there Reef Salt the other is there Marine Salt. The Marine salt is very easy to describe, it is comparable to Instant Ocean’s Reef Crystals and that is it, a very good salt. The Reef Salt is more comparable to Tropic Marin with these main differences, first TM does have more trace elements in the salt, they are chelated so they release over time. This is great if you can use the salt within six months from its mix date, if not they break down in the mix are rendered useless. The Seachem salt is also rich in trace elements that can be subsidized with additives. In addition it will buffer the PH to 8.4 and uses a Boron level that is three times that of natural seawater to help maintain a high KH. And no!!! There is no study or evidence in any way that has determined that this is too high of a level for anything, in fact if you look into TM you find the same thing. Also the Seachem Reef Salt has elevated levels of Calcium, Strontium and Iodide (not toxic iodine) for advanced coral propagation. So for my money, I will use the Seachem Reef Salt, with TM at an average of $70-75 a bucket and the Seachem at an average of $45-55 a bucket plus $10-15 for a 250mL bottle of Reef plus. To me it is an easy choice, and for those whom prefer the TM by all means, it is an excellent salt!!! I just can’t justify the expense when the Seachem is as good and cheaper.

Just some facts from Seachem and an independent lab study.

That would be nice except Pet Paradise doesn't sell Tunze. When we set her tank up, I am going to try and sell her on a closed loop. I set one up in Tracy's 36 bow and it is an amazing little tank. I was just there today, and she is having great coral growth and the overall tank appearence is very nice.

I was going to have Todd call Scott on the Seachem I like IO but from what i see it good for a fishonley tank and that's what Scott told me to that IO is not good for a reef tank unless you have the $$$ to get all you'r buffer trace elements and Strontium and Iodide (not toxic iodine

I'm chucking here. I look forward being solicited by you on a closed loop ;) I'd need to know more about this. I haven't really looked that much into it yet. I've read some on Melev's site I believe.

I had to look up what tunze nano streams was. Now I see that it is used to create current. 10x turnover is desireable for a reef tank is this correct?

I love this thread already. Great suggestions and discussions.
 
yes, 10x is decent, but more might be desirable depending on what you are keeping. SPS love flow and light, while ricordia like moderate light and low flow. I want SPS, and LPS in my 120. I am looking at 2 vortech powerheads @ 3000gph each and maybe 2 6045 nano streams @ 1200gph each. that's 8400gph which is 70x turnover. that might be overkill wwhich is why I would add the tunzes only if needed. you could accomplish that flow rate with a CL though.
 
Ah, this would be a low light set up. I already have a PC lighting (coralife) for 29g. It'll take two 65 watts Power Compact bulbs. I can always add one more 65 watts down the road but for now, I think I'll stay with low light set up.

I suppose that this should give you guys some more idea of what my set up is like and therefore what kind of flow I'd need.

Reet15, that sounds good. I might take up on your offer. I don't know when though. We can talk more on PM :)
