I just bought a blue tang from petco and drip acclimated it to my tank. It was dead within 2 days. I didn't realize it but they don't have a return policy on salt water fish. That sucks!!!

sounds like it wasn't healthy to start with.

not crashing on you but can't always blame the petstore for it dying as your supposed to do your part on checking the fish to see if it is heathly to start with. no matter what fish store you go to.

either way sorry to hear about your loss.

i think any petstore is ok if you are careful of what you buy...

fish are just kind of touchy... you could order it from anywhere and it could die in 2 days or less...

none the less... it still sucks. sorry it happened to you! so far I've had one fish die, but it wouldn't eat so... a whole other story right there.

You didn't mention if you put this Fish in your main display. You should always put new fish and corals in quarantine but many of us don't. I am guilty. But ALWAYS quarantine fish from Petco for a long time. They all have at a minimum ICK or atleast we have to assume this.

I go to Petco about once a week to get feeders and always look at the Salt tanks. They are always Ill and getting fresh water dips or other treatments. I tried to save a puffer from there a month or so ago, didn't make it. They let you adopt sick fish to try to save them. Last week they had a beautiful Hawain Naso, I really wanted to bring him home, but just didn't want to setup a hospital tank.

By the way, I am not too far from you. Just north of Boone and E18.

i work at a petco, and yes it sucks. most tangs i have ever gotten in were very, VERY thin and dont last long. most petcos are going to start getting rid of their saltwater stuff, they dont llike how much it costs them to keep the tanks going. but basically the company is run by morons, and i know i met the owners, dumbasses.

The only petco that I can say has a good SW dept is in marion.

Yes that is a good store.

I think the best and healthiest way to get is fish from an pet store is to get it before they have a to put it in there tanks. One less time for it to get stressed out and one less tank to caught any diesases.

I had the guy at petco feed the tang before I bought it and it didn't look like it was sick. I did put it right into my 75 main. I have 2 damsels so far and thats it. Long story short I had to take my damsels out because they wouldn't leave the fish alone. I took them out within 8 hours of putting the new fish in. I noticed within 12 hours the tang had started to develop spots on it. The next day I noticed the spots had spread but it was still eating. I was advised that the medicine for ick was $40 and should wait as it might come out of it without medicine if it was still eating. The next day it stoped eating and died. I know I can't blame Petco but I am not real happy with their no return policy. I am going to buy my fish from Drfostersmith.com from now on I think.

jtesdall, you are pretty close. What size of tank do you have and what do you have in it? I know some tesdall's from Ogden....I think he is a firefighter. Are you related to any Tesdall's from around Ogden?

I have a 90 Reef with tons of stuff, 55 aggressive, 55 frag and 30 sump refugium. I also have freshwater.

Hmmm, didn't know I had relatives over there. If it is spelled that way they must be related. My relation is from Story City, Mom's side are Anderson's and Phipps from Boone.

You're welcome to come over and check things out if you like. Tank tour was here a few months ago.

Word to the wise....never buy tangs from petco. I think I remember the guy that helped you get the tang.

I work at the jordan creek petco. and the only reason petco's fish do suck (fresh and salt) is because of 2 things, the vendors send sickly looking fish to us almost regularly, and second the people that know how to take care of fish are not allowed to do things the right way.
I have brought up the idea of a QT tank to them in order to not kill off so many tangs and angels.

we do have the power to reject orders, but you can't see squat in the bags from the vendors so it's impossible to check.
I even got them to let me lower the fish (mostly) only sides salinity down to 1.017ish

I don't have a fun time working there when all i see in the mornings is a tank full of crappy/dead tangs angels.
I am not an expert in the salt water, but will say i know more then probably all the employees there.
If you ever come in again look for Josh.

I bought my yellow tang from the petco in sioux city 3 years ago and he is still with me today. but of course I watched it for a week or so and also QT it.

i picked up a powder brown tang at petco in cr because it was $20. needless to say it was very thin but almost constantly had a full vegiclip since i got him, i feed seaweed and algae from my refugeum. plus i feed flakes and frozen around 3 times a day, it's stomach has been full every since i got him and now he is starting to build some body mass. i really credit the seaweed and algae to his survival.

acidlittle, did I see you that day I bought the tang? I am curious if I have met you before or if I would recognize you. I always go to petco when I am down at the mall or in the area. I usually have my
2 1/2 year old with me. Actually I almost took a job in Windsor Heights that would have paid about 12,000 more a year and had better benefits but my wife really doesn't want to move again right now, plus Windsor Heights would be a lot more dangerous place to work but it would have been a lot closer to all the LFS. Thats not to mention about any other store you could think of. Oh well, maybe next year.

I was there that day, dunno if I saw you, just remember a guy telling me that he had to feed one of the tangs for a customer. Basically I"m the short skinny guy that is attempting to grow a beard and is looking rediculous while doing it! lol....I am NOT the guy with red hair and tatoos...

jtesdall, I would like to come check out your tanks some time. Let me know what your schedual looks like. I have the next 3 days off (m, t, and w of this week). I usually work nights when I do work. Maybe you could check out my 75 and fuge sometime and let me know if you had any suggestions to make it better or if I did anything wrong. Anyone else is welcome to come check it out too if they would like but as of now I only have 1 damsel and about 50lbs of live rock. 2nd damsel got stuck in my baffles and I accidentally squished him as I was trying to scare him out of a corner.

ok, I remember you. I see you all the time when I come in. I have talked to you while I was in there before. I don't know if you know who I am or not but thats cool. Do you still live in Ames?

wait....I read your post wrong not the guy with the tatoos not sure if I know you or not...probably if I saw you I would
