Petco's Aquatic Gardens Salt Mix

I ran out of my Reef Crystals and haven't had time to get a new bucket. So being the testing guy I am, I stopped at Petco and picked up a small bag of Aquatic Gardens Premium salt mix to get me though a couple of water changes.

Here are the numbers at 1.0265

Calcium 430 ppm
Alkalinity 8 dkh
Magnesium 1440 ppm
PO4 0
Nitrates 0

I also bought a small bag of Red Sea(since I haven't tested it before) and will test in a couple of days.

Yes, please let me know what your numbers come out on the Red Sea mix. I recently switched over to Red Sea from Seachem Reef Salt (for no particular reason) and it tested out ok for me. The only issue I have with the Red Sea is their cleaning process is not quite perfected yet.

You really need to try Red Sea Pro Salt mix much better than the orginal Red Sea is my understanding.

In what respect?

what type of test kit you use , is it was 5 gallon mix (the test) ? it's look like the best result from all the salt mix in the market .

i will wait to see the test on the Red Sea to (hope it's the pro)

The numbers are very close to Reef Crystals except the calcium is a little higher at 460 with a Salifert test kit and the ALK is at 9.0 both with a SP of 1.026. The RC I tested was 420 on the CA and ALK was 11. It mixes very clear with no residue left in the mixing container.

My tests are all done with Saliferts and s.g. measured by refractometer.

I mixed up a 15 gallon batch and aerated overnight.

I just bought a small bag of Red Sea because I have not tested it before. The Red Sea Pro is probably like the difference between IO and RC. More calcium and magnesium.

When I run across some Red Sea Pro, I will test that since I am a testing fool :D

I bought a small bag of the Aquatic Gardens since thats all Petco had and it was a tad cheaper than the Red Sea but still both expensive for the quantity you get. I'll have to do some research and see if it comes in buckets and at what price. I will also watch my tank over the next couple of months to see if anything is different with this salt.

The only other thing I noticed is it is made in China. That may or may not be an issue for some folks. (trying to be politically correct)

That's what I thought too, they just buffer the Coral Pro to bring up the Ca and Mg a bit.

<<<RedSea seems to give light brown water for some people. >>>

As far as the brown water thing, it's because of their cleaning process which is not perfected yet. Remember, like 85% of this salt mix is coming right out of the Red Sea.
