JFYI â€"œ “Fish†Tanks
After considering the options of buying my R.O./D.I. & Salt vats of various composition, (Plastic vats, old salt buckets, Roughneck garbage cans, potable water containers, etc.), I ended up buying, drilling and plumbing 20 Gallon glass tanks & glass covers for my two vats. They're more compact, sealable, drillable, clear and a more permanent solution, IPO.
(And they Cost about the same too, in the end!)
Impersonal, Mega-stores buy tanks in huge volume. (Why wouldn't they? They are publicly traded entities, well capitalized and in it for the money. ) They buy like 10,000 tanks at a crack, and drive the cost down.
That said, my life-line of intellectual support, is ALWAYS to the LFS first, namely MemFish & Kermit’s, because of the community & customer service they afford us locally with: off-the-shelf availability and on-going expert advice, after the sale.
Are they always the “cheapest No. But they have a greater “value-proposition†overall, beyond mere Cost, initially.
For my money personally, I have and will continue to bring sales opportunities, as needed, to the LFS and give them first crack at competing (for larger ticket items), rather than just running to PetSmart. These are our friends and they need our $upport too.
Look, I don’t want to be a jerk and beat these guys up without cause, but I have a family to support too, so on rare occasion, I have brought Petco & PetSmart pricing to these shops, and they ended up matching the sale prices of the mega stores to keep the revenue in house. That’s fair enough for me.
We need our Local suppliers to remain healthy, so they will continue to be there for US, especially at the WTMRAC.
…in my opinion.
(Can you tell I’m a Supply-Chain guy, albeit in Aviation?)
I guess what I'm saying is: go shop your deal, and then see if the LFS wants to try and compete. If not, then run to PetSmart, but there's more that goes into to "value", than mere Price.
