pH is Rising

Need some advice here before I go into panic mode.... ;)

My pH has always been a very steady 8.2, sometimes a little lower but only by 0.2 at most. Yesterday I tested my pH and found it to be 8.4, which I was a little supprised but not too concerned.

Today I did another test and it had risen to 8.6, now I'm beginning to get a little worried, 0.4 increase in two days.

Whats changed, well about 7 days ago I upgraded my lighting system and I've noticed some die back with some of my Macro Algae, prolly due to the lighting upgrade, would this cause this problem ?

If so its going to be very difficult to remove, as its totally covering a few of my live rocks, and breaks very easy to the touch.

Your views / thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Check your ammonia level. I believe it is a base. Could come from your algae dieback. Never really had a problem getting rid of algae myself, I just use a tooth brush on the live rocks, let the skimmer run a while, then syphon out as much water as I can on the occasion it happens.

Also this could happen if your adding CaOH. I've had my PH much higher than that with a fish only tank and it didn't hurt them. Sometimes anenomies die at high Phs.

I tested again this morning (before lights come on) and the pH was 8.0, I assume the Macro Algae I have in the tank is making the pH go up and down.

Will this cause any long term ill effects for my fish / coral ?

Or is this acceptable to have these pH fluctuations on a daily basis ?
