phosban?

So I thought I was doing everything right....I've wanted a clam for a while, but I wanted to wait until my water parameters were stable...so they are now, and I read up on feeding, lighting, flow, placement....I just got my Maxima over the weekend and was reading in this forum where someone had a sick clam and was asked if they ran phosban. The answer was "no" so no more detail was given. IS THAT BAD? I haven't read anything in my research about that but now I am worried. I have phosban in my canister. Should I take it out? And if so, will my phosphates go up?

good question...

good question...

I have .02 phosphates (almost negligible) and was thinking about installing a Little Fishies Phosphate reactor...

Is that a problem?

Here ya go. A little overexposed because I took it with my cell camera.

Thats a crocea, not a maxima. Phosban is not a problem unless it starts showing signs of pinched mantle. If it does, remove the phosban. You should also run carbon if you arent doing so already. It looks healthy, by the way.

i agree with JB

to expand on this a little, its not necessarily a problem with iron based phosphate removers (phosban, rowa or any of the others) what the deal is is that some clams may carry a protozoan that can be excited by elevated levels of iron.

LOL thanks for the pic, your clam looks awesome good find. And I must add thats a great pic for a cell phone.

OK, I feel better about the phosban.

The LFS that I bought this clam from was very excited about this shipment. He had about 20 of them. He was showing me how big their feet were. That didn't mean much to me since I hadn't looked at any other clams feet for comparison, but it meant something to him! I was impressed with how good the mantle looked.
