Phosguard

I throw a bag in my sump on the frag tank every 3 months and when I purchased the last bags ( see pic ) I noticed that the amount of gallons treated had increased. I sent and email to Seachem and they responded that it was a typo and it should be 60 gallons.

I then asked them if the product had been improved because I thought it always treated 30 gallons....they have not responded yet.

It is great to get a quick response !

Hello Keith,
Thank you for your reply. The product itself has not changed, but we discovered that a single packet of PhosGuard was actually able to handle a much greater volume of water than previously thought. PhosGuard works very quickly, and an overdose of PhosGuard can lower phosphate concentrations so quickly that it is stressful to the fish. The original recommended amount of 1 packet per 30 gallons is correct and safe, but is at the upper end of the safe spectrum. Many of our customers were using an overdose of the product to attempt to control phosphate issues and were running into issues with fish stress due to rapidly changing water parameters. We recently changed the packaging on the product to recommend a lower dose both to reflect out new knowledge of the capacity of PhosGuard and to prevent these overdosing situations.
Thank you,
Seachem Support

Well that's cool and good in a way now I wonder if that package will go up in price since that amount can treat 60 gallons now instead of 30

I'd be willing to bet that they ran a study and it showed that people either bought a different product or didn't buy their product because of perceived value.

I don't think anything has actually changed and their response is just fancy words to explain why.

It would be like salifert changing their boxes from 100-200 tests to just 200 tests because people "tend to run the low range test more".
