Phosphate Media

I have a kent P04 reactor and just tried to switch my media. I have that Kent Power phos media.... Its terribly hard to get clean prior to use.

Any suggestions on more of an easier, cleaner media? That doesnt take 6 hours to rinse.... lol

I'm done with Power Phos.... I just made a complete mess of myself and my floor... :)

Thanks guys....

When you mean clean...do you mean getting the dust out? I use Phosban and a Phosban Reactor. All I do with the phosban is fill up the reactor with new phosban, close up the reactor, hang it on my sump, put the output nossle into a bucket, and run it with the gate valve barely open. I run it until the water in the reactor is clear. Takes about 10-15min and about 2 gallons of system water. Most of the dust will be expelled into the bucket. Much of it stays in the reactor during normal use which is normal.

Doesn't your reactor or media come with instructions?

just dose with kalk to raise calcium carbonate, and lower phosphates. Eric Borneman suggests this to be a good method in his book.

I did exactly that, ran TONS of water through it into a bucket. It is STILL dusty. I was looking for more of a media that is ceramic. I know Kent makes it, but I have heard not so good things about it. Just tired of the dusty stuff.

Any other suggestions?

I use GFO from bulkreefsupply.Rinses with a gallon or two.Cheaper than Phosban and others.

Just checked it out. I'm going to order some right now...

Thanks SABOB!

Ditto that! Run a phosban reactor very slow or it'll break up the media. Bulkreefsupply has pellets, which break up less than granules.

I use TLF PhosBan and use the bucket method as hermitage described and the water runs clear after about 3 minutes. Make sure you purge the dust at the same flow rate you use for running the reactor. Too much flow will grind it to dust.

You can try other brands but don't use the Kent Ceramic media. It works but has a 48 hour lifespan before it's starts leaching back into the water. The iron based media lasts a month or longer and won't release the Phosphate back into the water.

Thanks guys....

I don't run too much flow through the reactor. I use a aquaclear 10 pump turned all the way down. Max flow is 80gph. I might have it to about 30-40 gph... Still dusty...

I have ordered GFO pellets from bulkreefsupply.

Time to clean reactor....

Thank you guys for all your help!

I put the media in, put it in the sink, fill up the sink with water and turn it on for a minute or so. Is this not a recommended process? It seems to work ok.

Thanks

It is best thought to use clean RO/DI water to rinse the product. Since tap water has SOMETIMES traces of Phosphates and Silicates, you would be using up your media.

Just my thoughts, I know it's not much but I will continue to use RO/DI water instead of running tap through it....

Note; You will find the Bulk reef supply GFO to have very little dust as compared to many brands. It is much like Phosur but less money.

Same with the Rox 8 carbon. Man it started out clear water. I have never seen that before.

I have heard good things about it so I am going to give it a shot. (Based on feedback from RC)

My next question to you guys:

I used to run 150g of the Kent power phos. By the time the GFO gets here it will be 5-6 days with running no po4 media. Could I harm my clam, sps, and lps if I were to run that again after none for 5 days? I don't want to stress them out.

I was thinking of filling my kent reactor about a third of the way full with media...

Any thoughts/suggestions?

TIA, Brad
