I have a question...any luck with phosphate reactors in here?

I can't seem to get rid of some darn algae in my tank...

I was wondering about these and if they have any negative impacts on reef tanks?

two little fishes work good. i've found ocean blends phoshate remover works the best just have to use a media bag inside the reactor and just keep the flow low. also you need to add the di to your ro system to make sure you get rid of any possible metals etc. a small maxi jet will work. and you can get add on di's for 30.00 and it's as simple as plugging your good product from the ro into the di and then out of the di will now be your product water. btw imo no negitive effects only positive. most sps won't do well with high phosphates. and while your at it pick up a phosphate test kit to see what your levels are at. the cheap api work good
 
The only negative, not including abuse (not changing out media, etc) is if you're running carbon in the reactor, prolonged continuous use of carbon has been traced to HLLE in tangs and angels in a few instances.

Is the algae a problem from phosphates or maybe something else? Using RO/DI water is a great start. Also, does any sunlight hit the tank? My 125 is having problems with sunlight and brown algae. Had to put a curtain up. And how old are the bulbs? Old bulbs sometimes throw a wierd spectrum that triggers algae to bloom for whatever reasons.

I have a Little Fishes as well after trading my AquaC XP+ reactor to DJChestnut for it. The AquaC was just too large to fit in my stand.
 
I have had the two little fishies phosban reactor for about 9 months now in my 90 gallon, with no adverse affects. I use 250ml of ROWAphos that I replace every 3 months, and it's drastically reduced the amount of hair algae that is in my tank (practically nonexistent). It sits in my sump right next to my protein skimmer. You will need to purchase a small powerhead/pump to push the water through it.
 
i've used the kent and two little fishes, great and easy to use. definately helps with algae. it is worth the money to buy and run on tank.
 
I use the two little fishies as well with a.. I believe its a mini jet 600. I can't remember off the top of my head. The idea is to keep the flow low so the media just barely bubbles or "percalates" at the top. I probably spelled that wrong.
 
what brand of media have you all found that works the best?
I heard that there is a mix of carbon/remover media that works well...
 
I have been using Phosban I believe. I actually need to go buy more soon to replace my media its been a few months. It is all essentially the same stuff- rust :)

Some people will run a combo of stuff but personally I don't want to let carbon sit in my system too long so I use just the phosphate remover. To each their own on this and some media says it should be safe to do it but for me its just my personal thing.
 
I use the 2 little fishes reactor with PURA complete as my media. I change it out every 60 days. Trates 0, phosphates are unreadable on my test kits (not a spec of algae anywhere in my tank, and I only wipe the glass of film algae 1x per week), and the water is crystal clear. I have a minijet 606 powering the reactor.
 
Jef, i'd start w/your RO unit, as you said last week your TDS was like 15 or something, if i remember correctly. i run 2 of the two little fishes ones. one has rowaphos, and the other has carbon. i run two, because they need different flow rates between the two, and the carbon one gets changed more often. both are fed off my return pump.

i do have an old style reactor you can have. it's the old PITA type, with the 16 thumb screws :/ lemme know if you are interested. i can leave it at the front door for u.
 
i also use phosban reactor 150 for both carbon and phosban. i just use a MJ 600 to push water through both of it. 10 months and no problems at all.
 
Pura Complete sounds like some good stuff...If I get that though...I may add some more phosphate media...

Has anyone used Phosguard?
 
Yeah I have used Phosguard, I prefer to use the Oceans Blend product, in my experience it seems to do a better job using less product. The onlt issue is the size, but if you use a filter bad then there is no problem. Just be sure to have only enough flow to gently fluidize the media.

u mean filter bag or pad? you shouldn't need to put the media inside a bag, if it's in the canister. when i got my reactor i ordered extra pads for like $0.50. with fine media, i just double up the top pad.
 
I use a bag as the sponge/pad that I have in mine has large porous openings and the Oceans Blend media is rather small. I had an issue with some getting thru the pad and into the sump.

I use the Pura Complete. It really polished my water within a week of adding it. How often is everyone saying you should replace it?
 
I just ordered the Pura Complete...enough for 400gallons $26 and the Via Aqua poly reactor...It comes with the pump and everything for like $35...not too bad...

ORB thanks for the offer...I think I will be good with the one I ordered...I will let you know if I need some help...I am not sure I have much room in my sump area...lol
