If you do the math then you'll find that over time the Hanna colorimeter quickly approaches the prices of the Merck kit because the Hanna refills are 2/3rds the price of the Merck ($21/100 vs. $30/100). I didn't factor in batteries, however. So if you're checking your tank and GFO reactor effluent levels regularly then you might as well get the colorimeter.

jdieck: you rock, have you published the results of your GFO testing anywhere? I didn't find it on your site...

er, maybe "quickly approaches" is hyperbole but over the lifetime of the colorimeter the price is about the same.

No I have not, I wanted to do a write up of the standardization of the measurements of the Hanna but I need to run a lot more samples against the standard at different dilutions to complete the graph and I have had not much free time. First came my tank replacement and then my work picked up heavily.
There are some other projects I ran that are still in the back burner like comparison of chaeto growth at high vs low flow, spread static vs tumbling ball and high/low lighting. I also wanted to make a write up about pumps used in the hobby, electrical safety, CO2 safety and how a regulator works and should be setup and other projects but again time catches up with other priorities.

You can use one third or one gram per three gallons of aquarium water.

Are you getting the advertised 8 weeks out of the HC before changeout? 400 grams will go a long way if so.

The actual lenght of time will depend on how much phosphate you import and export and if you are on maintenance mode or in lowering mode.
Lowering existing high levels will take a lot more media, maintaining a low phosphate level on the other hand imply just removing what gets added every day and will last a lot longer. If in addition you have low bio-load and other means of export (like growing macro, dripping Kalk or very good skimmer) the media will last well longer than the 8 weeks.
