Is there certain types of macro that remove phosphate better then other types or do they all basically just remove nitrates?
Phosphate removing media is so expensive I'm hoping for a cheaper way. Any thoughts?

I have never seen any studies showing phosphate concentrations among different species of algaes. I think your best bet would be to find one that grows the best in your tank and stick with that. Chaeto seems to do well in a wide range of conditions.
