I was reading about Melev's photobox and tried a simpler approach, with what I believe is more flexibility. I bought an acrylic box from the container store for $12.99

I then mounted my camera on a tripod overlooking the tank , with the lens above the water surface. I then positioned the acrylic box to break the surface and held the box in place while I took pics. I was able to manually focus the lens with this approach. Very simple - nothing to build. I also used my speedlights off camera to light the tank.
