What is the benifit of reducing flow at night? Is it just energy savings? Does the ocean do this?

At night the tide comes in, the ocean calms. The idea is to mimic this effect. It really is just a toy though, take it or leave it. I personally wouldn't reduce the flow because in the confines of a box the reduce flow leads to a depressed pH. I leave the night setting high but I beleive eliminating the pulsing and having a high static flow does help make a more natural environment so I do use the photo cell just not to lower flow.

So during the day you use both streams at 100% and at night they pulse?

No, other way around. The photocell in night mode just stops the pulsing and locks the pumps in at the lower knob setting so I set the top at 30% and the bottom at 100%.
