Photographing my sps

I have a nikon d80 with a 18-70mm af-s lens.
I an have a heck of a time with resolution.
Anyone out there using a similar set=up and give me advice on settings.
This camera is new and I am just learning the bells and whistles.

are you using a tripod, i could never get the shots i wanted until i went and got one.
