Photoperiod intensity vs duration

I understand why we want to emulate the type of light the sun puts out but it makes absolutely no sense that people are trying to emulate how light is delivered in nature. Most of the stony corals ive seen in nature are brown. What I am trying to do is artificially, with technology , get my corals to the best color and growth possible using the tools that modern reefing has to offer and from what I have seen in nature and at coral greenhouses is not very colorful.
IMO everything else is hype to get you to buy the latest and greatest using new gadgets and features. I love new gadgets, dont get me wrong but when reefing I stick to what works and is proven

I wonder if any new information as come up on this old thread and would love to hear if anyone has seen anything. This is a really interesting topic I have wondered this myself, there are a million variables, but does X par for Y/2 hours per day have the same effect (colors, Growth) of X/2 par for Y hours per day?
