Physicists and wood tank builders...

Just an FYI, most people hate having to chase down links & read them. If you have questions or want input it is better just to post that here.
Or post a qoute from the linked thread & ask for input

Thanks Dave.

Physicists and wood tank builders...

Alright folks, I'm starting to plan my new inwall, upgrading from a 125 and I need some help.

Plan is to build a wooden tank. 1" ply, eurobraced, front and side starfire glass panels with an epoxy resin coating on the wood. The overflow will be exterior the whole width of the rear of the tank. I will use my current lighting for a mixed reef tank, which is a 72" Maristar unit with 3 X 250 w DE HQI's and 4 x 39w T5 actinincs.

My buddy who will be helping, actually doing most of the work, has built this kind of tank before. We're just not sure with 1/2" starfire how long we can get away with on the tank. I have a 12' wall to play with and the starfire comes in 8' lengths. The tanks internal dimensions will be 30"High X 30" Wide.

Questions are:

1. With the dimensions mentioned above, how long can we make the tank without it exploding from internal pressures?

2. How much of an overlap of wood and glass on the edges should we allow?

3. How wide should the eurobracing on the bottom and around the top edge of the tank be?

That's it for now, I'm sure I'll have many more questions to come. Any critiques or suggestions from those who have done this type of project are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

I have about 3/4-1" of overlap in my plywood tank.

On an 8' tank I have 6" oak boards for eurobrace with a puny center brace. It would hold without it but it would bow a wee bit. so I put the brace there. It is about 1" wide. Holds with no problems.

Thanks Kent,

How thick is your glass? Regular or tempered?

What is the height and width of the tank?

Thanks
