Phyto

Good question, I tried making it myself and it crashed hard, lol, Gonna try again real soon when I get some DT's or order a new culture.

DT's is hard to get started. Order from someone with live cultures like Reed Mariculture, it will save you a lot of headache.

I use to grow my own nano, but have gotten lazy and just use a bottle of DT's now to culture copepods for the mandarins.

Thanks for the heads up BlueCoast, I may consider ordering from Reeds.

Side note, how many mandarins do you have? I currently have a mated pair in my 90g, one of these days I'll record them dancing at night lol.

I had one that I picked up locally on the boards. I decided that I will do my best to keep fish in pairs when I can. I figure it would suck to spend your life looking for some lovin and never seeing another fish that looked like you.

They are fun to watch for sure.

I picked up some benthic copepods from here http://stores.aquaculturenurseryfarms.com/ to keep them a little fatter between feedings. They have been very easy to culture.

there is a woman selling it on craigslist. 12$ for 32oz bottle. she seemed to know what she is doing. I was going to get some but she is in brandon and I am in springhill. if you want her number or email address I can get it

Man I would love to find a mate for mine. I have a female but she eats flake and is in a 29 cube. I know I would pay through the nose for a male allready eating flake

I would be alittle concerned about buying homemade phyto off CL. Don't get me wrong nothing wrong with homegrown as long as I'm the one growig it and I know it's safe. Many tanks have crashed due to spoiled phyto that has began to decay. I spend the extra money as buy DTs from stores I know handle it properly. Just be cautious is all I'm saying.

I understand being concerned but its just 12$ I am willing to give it a shot. I havent talked to her in over a month. I hope she still has it. If anyone is getting it in springhill I would even throw some in on gas to get a bottle

It's not the cost of the phyto I'm worried about. Its the quality if the phyto. I wouldn't risk the tons of money in corals I have in my tank to save a few dollars. I'm not telling anyone not to buy it I'm just saying be careful.

If it smells like sulpher, throw it out. Otherwise, it should be fine.

Color should be a healthy light to dark green depending on density of the culture, any yellow should be avoided as it is a sign of dying algae.

Anything that would harm the reef would most likely keep the phyto from being healthy as well, considering it is swimming in a concentrated dose of it.

Personally, I'm more worried about the dollar store turkey baster leaching some plastic chemical into my tank.

Wow it's amazing how these threads just take off, just found a buddy who said he can get me some of the home made stuff. I don't really feel comfortable buying stuff from Craigs list. I have no issues sell, but buying is a different story. However if no one sets up shop locally I'm just going to keep doing the Reeds Mariculture.
