Phytoplankton: Emiliania huxleyi

Hi all,

I have read about the commonly cultured phyto species in terms of ease of culture and nutritional anti-bacterial properties, etc. However, I could not find any information on Emiliania huxleyi.

Does anyone know anything about the nutritional value of this species of phytoplankton? Do their calcium shells make them harder to digest? Given that they supposedly make up 1/3 of the world's phytoplankton by mass, I would think a lot of things in nature must eat them.

Are they just not talked about in reef hobby and aquaculture because of difficulties of culturing them or is it because they just aren't that nutritious or useful for filter feeders?

Thanks.
