Is anyone in area growing phytoplankton? I'm planning on starting a batch this weekend. Also would anyone be interested in them for your reef tank?

i would be not sure why but if itll help coral growth id try it im also trying to start keeping clowns. so maybe down the road for sure.

I'm planning to start copepods and phytoplankton next week. I need the pods to feed a mandarin and the plankton to feed the pods.

I was going to try propagating some Phyto-Feast Live, but if that didn't work, order the discs from Florida Aqua.

I should be getting what I ordered on Monday and will start then and let you all know how it turns out,(wishing self luck)

Where did everyone get their starter cultures from?

I've got some Tigger Pods and Phyto-Feast Live I picked up at the LFS. I've been feeding the pods in the bottle and they are pretty active for living in my refrigerator.

I got mine from the lfs here, gonna try that first. If that doesn't work Im ordering DT's.

And Reddy, where is there a lfs in Ithaca?? Did a new one move in??

Unfortunately there's no store in Ithaca. I've tried to talk other stores into opening here, and they've thought about it, but the retail climate here is really weird.

I've been going to Tropical Fish Outlet in Elmira and Tropical Fish Emporium in Auburn.

I didn't think to search on ebay. I'll have to check that out.

Reddy - Welcome, nice to see an Ithacan. Always thought this area was ripe for a Salt store, but one that does mostly on customers site would be needed. There is so much money here, you would think one could survive. Problem is outside of the professors, there is a lot of seasonal money. Maybe Whoopi could pay for a year round tank maint? LOL

Oh no! So theres a chance I'll be out hiking the falls and run into Whoopie? That's gonna be weird.

There must be someone doing a good in home business in Ithaca. The guy from the store in Auburn was showing me huge in-wall tank he takes care of here and telling me about the many crazy Ithaca jobs he has turned down.

I will be tagging along to see how everyone is doing with the cultures. I was growing brine shrimp but ran into some issues with water quality. Now I just hatch and feed to my tank.

Ok!! First batch successfully split!!!! after next Sunday I'll have a full 2L of plankton ready for my tank!! After that split I'll have 4, 2L going! It takes some time... But its cheaper in the end!! Now.... To just find a bigger place for more 2L bottles!!!

Continue to give progress! At the rate your going you should consider purchasing 3 liter bottles of generic from weis for like a 1.50
