Pick the lens for the XTi please

Thinking of getting a Canon Rebel XTi and looking at a lens to get for it.

I really like the look of macro shots but also for vacations for just any regular distance shots.

The 100mm/f2.8 is great for macros right?

Well, there was another one that the guy at the store said, a 25mm-135mm lens. He said it was versatile, anyone know anything about that?

The 100mm/f2.8 is no good for regular shots is it? Is the kit lens good for regular shots?

If it's the 28-135 IS USM I had one and hated it.

The 100 2.8 is a great macro lens and can also be used for normal shooting.

The kit lens is fine to start with. After you shoot for a while it'll be easier to decide what you really want in terms of additional lenses.

The kit lens isn't all that bad if you can stop it down a bit, but for most situations that isn't going to work unless you are on a tripod with a static subject. But there are plenty of options when looking to replace the kit lens, depending on your budget of course. I have the Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 EX DC which is a great lens but is being replace by the Canon EF 24-105 F/4L. The Sigma's focal lenght is basically the same as your kit lens but the quality is much better. Tamron also makes a really nice 17-50mm F/2.8 lens, I just haven't personally used it. You can get into a 24-XXmm or 28-XXmm zoom but those won't be very wide on the crop body. I would try and find something 20mm and below unless you plan to buy an untra-wide angle lens as well (like the Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22).

I don't know what from what when it comes to talking lenses for a camera. So for great macros a 100 f2.8 is a good one and also pretty good for normal shots?

I looked through the camera at the store and set it to macro mode and zoomed in close to a picture and it was real blurry (kit lens). I don't know if there is other settings to fix that or if that's just how the kit lens is?

One choice I had:

and the other the guy at the store told me about that was good because it was versatile:
I can't find the link, but I think it's the one beerguy was talking about. It was something in the 20sx135mm I'm sure. It was a little shorter and wider, the guy told me it was good because it lets a lot of light in or something?

As you can tell, I'm not good with camera settings and such right now so any help is appreciated.

So for a canon rebel XTi (good camera?), the 100mm f2.8 is a good lens for macros and normal shooting?

At the store if I were to go try it out, is there any settings to put the camera on to take a good photo? I tried the macro mode but that was it and it was the kit lens, all the way zoomed it was blurry.

Then I will try the 100 2.8 lens, still the same thing? Any other setting to set to make sure it's producing the best image or just put it on macro mode?

Thanks :D

My 100mm F/2.8 has never left the house as I only use it for macro's on my tank. I'm sure it would make a great portrait/medium-telephoto lens but it's not the smallest lens in the world. I normally carry my zoom's around with me and leave the macro at home. Maybe you should use your kit lens for a while and really learn WHY you need a better lens...there is no one lens for every person. There are a lot of considerations when purchasing a lens so you need to know exactly which one you want and what you plan on using it for. Do you need IS? Constant f-stop? Is big and bulky ok? Internal focusing? I think you get the idea :)

I hate to say it but I had the same experience with mine and sold it shortly after buying it. It was much too soft for my liking...
I also agree with Doug on the Tamron's 28-75mm f2.8 lens, it is versatile enough for walk around lens and outside, with ample lighting, it is hard to beat for the price.

Blazer, I have looked at some of your pics with the background all blacked out, that is amazing. I tried that on one of mine and then theres another photo, take a look:

Yours looks so much better, my camera now is a sony DSC model so that is probably 1 reason why? Maybe the picture just lacks color? On the f-stop, IS, internal focusing, etc, I have no idea what any of that is lol. Does it not pay to buy a nice camera if you don't know how to use it correctly to take a good photo? lol

Above are some of the reasons why I ask for some pictures of a camera/lens without photoshop, I need a lens and camera that will produce a good picture right there instead of photoshopping afterward, I can't use my photoshop program either
