Okay guys, I have been contacted by 2 people from on this site that are selling LR and LS that I was going to be picking up this weekend. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for that would make or break any deals ?!?!? I would just hate to end up with 40 pounds of live rock that I cannot use for some reason.......

Im also getting the LR and LS from 2 different people, I was going to get some water from the guy selling me the LR since it has been in that water for so long already, but when i'm going to add the LS, should i rinse it with some of the water from the LR sellers supply, or just use new saltwater...

Any help you all can give me is greatly appreciated...

Doug

Wouldn't bother rinsing the LS, even with its original saltwater that it came from. Doing so will cause you to expose the LS to the air at some point(s) and will kill off some of the beneficial organisms. Not worth it IMO. As far as LR, you mainly want to avoid rocks that are heavily populated by aiptasia anemones (glass anemones) and rock with heavy hair algae growth is not desirable either. Small amounts of either nuisance is generally not a problem and should not be cause to "break" a deal such as this.

are you just starting this project?
If so just let the tank run for a few weeks with only the LR/LS and test the water and do some water changes
as for getting the water from another tank you can do it but I dont see the point (JMO)

I thought it would help with possible die-off from the stuff on the LR. I was going to be cycling it so that wasnt really a worry of mine, just wanted to make sure that there wasnt anything to be worried about when picking up the LR and LS.

as long as it is a new project you can almost always correct whatever problem you run into with patiance
the only thing I would really worry about is if any of it has been exposed to copper

I second Joe's point, try to be sure the rock and sand was in a reef tank, not a fowlr tank or you may be getting more than you want.

Here is what the LS guy sent me...... sounds like a good deal to me based on the prices im seeing at all the other local places....

"I got plenty of live sand fro you. It is E.S.V. oolitic that has been goign for 3 years. I just sold the majoriy of the live rock last week and the sand is still sitting inthe tank. I have ac ouple nice peices of live rock as well.

LS - $1.00/lb

LR - $3.00/lb light pieces

The live rock is Fiiji premium. I don't have much left(about 10lbs) but it has green star polyps, button polyps, and mushrooms on them, which is why I kept them. There is one small rock with a 1.5 inch BTA anenome on it but it does not sound like your tank is cycled. I will probably post for someone to take the anenome before this weekend.

It is actually best to keep the live rock in water at all times. A lot of good bacteria and corraline algae can die off if you keep it out of water for even 5 minutes or so. When you come by I will give you a bucket to bring for the live rock full of water. I will also give you a small powerhead for the bucket to use for flow until your tank has cycled. Reason being is their are some corals/mushrooms on the rocks and in order to keep them somewhat healthy, you should probably wait a couple weeks before adding this rock into the tank. Don't worry, I will throw the bucket and powerhead in free of charge. It just makes sense to keep what is already on the rock alive instead of dieing in your tank."

So I was going to pick that up and then probably get another 30 pounds of LR from another guy...... what does everyone think ??

if your in the city and need help with anything let me know. As you allready know lots of people are helpful here. Once you get your tank cycled let me know and i might have a couple zoa frags for you and maybe some softies.

Im in the nothwest suburbs... (close to schaumburg) but would travel for some free frags... :D

I just did a couple of mods to my BC29 to get the Tunze Nano skimmer to fit in the second chamber, and it came out REALLY good.... Cant wait to get some water in this thing and get it cycling....
