Pics from our 40 breeder

I had trouble uploading the right files so some of them are the wrong ones which I didn't edit the neon blue out of. Now I am tired, that took forever, I hope you enjoy.

I will have to take one. I struggled taking these pics because I have an old melves reef top down box which I couldn't get to the zoom dial or whatever it's called. Also the lights prevent me from taking pics from anywhere but the edge of the tank because they are low and fixed to the wall. The lense doesn't have an auto stabilizer which made it hard as well as having to use the live shoot on my cameras screen, which kept shutting off every 10 seconds. I need to figure out what bulbs to use while I shoot, I had trouble shooting with all the bulbs on because it made my screen blurry and couldn't tell what I was focusing on in the live shoot mode. So most shots turned out too blue, probably because of the. Reef brite strip that I forgot to turn off. Now that I see the pics it makes me want to redo them...

Here is a quick phone picture.
Everything is wild or mariculture and I just got everything settled in to the new tank. I will have to trim a lot but I think it will grow out nicely. Let me know what you think.

Only a handful of the wild pieces were small colonies when I got them. Everything else was a frag from a wild colony that I have grown out a few times before. I didn't want to start the tank with a bunch of frags since most of my corals I had left were mariculture size. I buy Mari and wild corals because everyone has the same corals in my area and I want to trade and sell with stuff people don't have. I got tired of growing out colonies and having trouble selling them even for dirt cheap. No one water them because everyone has already seen or already has them.
I actually enjoy keeping wild corals more than aquacultured. You don't know what your getting and they always turn out unique or beautiful. At least once you lean how to choose what your buying. That in its own is hard to learn if you don't know much about sps. Aquacultured you always know what your getting and that is no fun in my book. Actually I only have 7 mariculture or wild corals that were bought as mini colonies. I love thick nubby branched humilis and such acros, no one sells frags of thoes so I had to buy maricultured colonies. I have a number of small frags scattered in there anyways, from a few pieces that didn't make the move.

Love it, 40g bb sps yes!!!! wild or mariculture is cheating though lol j/king ;)

This is my first bare bottom tank and I won't go back I love it. I would agree though filling a tank with large wild colonies to fill out is cheating :spin1:

I have three display tanks hooked onto my sump. This one, an anemone and lps tank, and a zoanthid and chalice tank. Lps tank is another 40 breeder and the zoa tank is a 90 tall that we just upgraded to after our shallow tank cracked. I think total gallons is around 200. Here is a link to that tank http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2155574

Lighting
I ended up settling with 6 t5s and a reefbrite after playing with leds and led and t5 combos. They sit about 6 inches above the top of the tank and I just added the last ones a week ago. I use a Hamilton ballast to drive a coral plus and a blue plus in the middle with the reefbrite and a icecap 440 to drive two ATI actintics, one aqua blue special and another coral plus. The icecap goes the second coral plus a poker look which I like too.

Filtration
I use a life reef 4 foot skimmer with a skin's 181 body at the top to help transfer the bubbles to the top better. I love the mazzie injection. I run it recirculating with an iwaki 55rlt recirculating it and a mag 7 supplying it.

I have the sump full of live rock and a korilia 8 to keep detritus flowing to the skimmer, which is also a 40 breeder.
We use a 40 breeder for a lit refugium under the sps and lps tanks full of rock, soft corals and macros that drains back to the sump. The refugium has only the return flow going through it, which is maybe 800gph.

I run rox carbon and regenerate my gfo which I run in an upflow reactor. Carbon stays in a mesh filter bag next to the korilia 8 in the sump. I am slowly working vinegar into my system now.

I switched from dosing pumps with b ionic back to a calcium reactor and kalk again. I do not care for the dosing pumps as much and think I get better growth with a reactor and kalk.

Feeding
We feed a variety of food from pe mysis to flakes and pellets. We feed a lot of food and have about 25 fish and still need to stock the 90 which has 3 in it now. We use selcon, vitamin c, and other food supplements soaked in our frozen food daily.
I feed random coral foods every now and then but probly don't need to.

Nice aquascape! Although I could use a few more pics ( video would be better)to make sure ;)

I have been wanting to make a video forever. But more along the lines of a cheesy video that shows our tanks and makes fun of some of the odd nerdy things that we as reef keepers might do every now and then. :) I was going to do it when I had my 210 gallon setup but we had to break it down before I got the chance. I don't like going from 210 to 40 gallons either.

Looks great..that's a tall skimmer..

Yea we feed a ton of food so I just kept it from when I had the 210 setup. I have been wondering if the large skimmer is the cause of one or two of my corals having no polyp extension. I tried a product for, feeding at night and the next few days it looked a little better. Going to have to keep my eye on it to see if it really helps.

This coral I am having trouble with polyp extension on. Its polyps are pink and the base is a soft mint green for now.

This one I have had for a year or two and won't grow. I got it and it looked like it would color up great but turned tan. I am hoping it gets some good colors on it but who knows. I got it because I pmed a guy with great rainbow thick nubby corals like this and he said he got them all when they were brown. So I still have hope it will change. Or at least grow!

Here is a pic I took from the side with the anthias hogging the picture.

These are two of my favorite wild corals that I have had for about 5 years and have cut tons of frags and cut back down to a smaller size a few times as well. Both got me into keeping wild acros. The first one I call bad azz acro and the second prizm acro, in order to keep track of them in our local club. Sorry for the cell pics. I will have to get an avast porthole for my camera so I can take pics easier.

I don't know about impressive, but thank you! I just got the calcium reactor running again and almost have it dialed in. I think in a few months there will be a little more to look at, and next year It should look like an actual tank. These corals have been stressed since they have all moved to different systems, twice in one year. :( My shortcake has refused to grow since the bacterial infection in my 210. I had to cut frags to save it...

Reeflover62 i love your tank and am very glad you chose 10k bulbs. Not enough tanks run them these days and I think they bring out amazing colors. And by the looks of it you don't need much advise! :spin2:
