Here is a pic of my tank as now. Been running 3 weeks.

What size is the tank / sump?

If my tank was not on an external wall, I do not think the heaters would ever even come on (combing 2 threads), never heard of the heater you are referring to.

It is a 90 gallon tank and I dont know how many gallon the sump is. It is 24x12x16 and stays about 1/2 full. The heater is sold at drsfostersmith. Maybe I can buy a smaller heater ot 2 smaller heaters and not worry about it.

right now it is a 4x65 pc light. I have no idea what brand bought it off of ebay several years back. I am currently trying to decide what type of lighting I want to do. I am either going to go with 2x250mh whit actinic supplement or I am going to go with 6x54 to 8x54 t5. I really like the aquactinics constellations 7 bulb setup and may go with it.

I had planned to go with T5's too. I was liking the Aquactinis, TEK, and ATI power modules. I also considered doing a DIY canopy using the T5HO kits from ReefGeek.

I like the output of the MH but I like the light options of the t5 alot better and they run alot cooler. They from what I understand last longer and are cheaper to replace also.

Looks like a pretty good start. I started out with t5's but ended up going with mh's. I like to be able to have options and the mh's provided me with just that.

Anyway, keep posting updates. It's always nice to see a tank grow up. :)

T5's actually put off the same heat as MH watt for watt. It just doesn't seem like it because the heat is spread out so much more. T5's do put out more par per watt, so you can run less wattage (less heat) and get similar light levels as MH. Since your running less wattage they are cheaper to run and the bulbs do last longer if they are not overdriven. I think I read 18 months.

If your going for pure horsepower, the T5's cannot match a 400W MH bulb. 2 of those will put out a lot more power than the number of T5's that you can physically fit over the same space.

My fixture (2x250 14K + 2x54 actinic) will probably have more par than a 8 bulb T5HO fixture using a mix of bulbs but it will also use a good bit more electricity. (608W vs 432W). However, depending on what your keeping you may not need the extra par which you get from a fixture like mine.

Also, tank size and shape plays a big role in which is better. If your trying to light a 20" or 24" W tank the MH rules because you can do it with a single bulb. T5's for such a small tank is very expensive. On a 36" W tank I think the T5's are better because you most likely need 2 MH for that width. On a 48"W tank, I think it depends on what you want to keep.

It does not really look like a shrimp. It has 2 long antennas and the body you see.

As far as light I still have not made up my mind. I really like the aquactinics constellations 7 lamp but it is 680 so at least 800 with bulbs and I could get a nice 2x250mh with actinics for that or cheaper so I dont know what I am doing. Right now I am doing research and trying to learn and looking for used deals.

I started buying my CUC today. I added 4 turbo snails, 3 blue leg hermits and 1 red leg hermit. I think I am going back tomorrow and going to get a few more red legs. I think I am also going to get a few blue damsels. Damsels are reef safe right?
Those turbos are cool. I can see everywhere they go. They have been in the tank about 2 hours now and have almost cleaned the rock I started them on.

Damsels are reef safe but they are a very aggressive fish. You may end up needing to pull them out later.

Well that sucks. I like the looks of them but if they are mean I dont know what to do. I guess I could try them and pull them out but with the caves they will be hard to get to.
