Hey Alex,

Glad to see your tank is doing great. I am having wipeout conditions in my tanks. Lost both my clams end of October, and last week I got back from DC to see that all the polyps on my alveopora had dropped off. May have to scratch the whole setup and start again.

Hope for better luck next year ...

Alex that Clam pic is too cute! It will be awesome when its all covered. Are you going to keep it in just one kind of Zoas or are you thinking of adding different colors?

thanks for the compliments. some of my zoas haven't been doing so well though. not sure why. they just get so tiny. i took the skimmer off for a couple weeks about a month ago when i only had 1 fish. that seemed to help things.

i've added a bunch of fish lately so everything is starting to look better except for some zoas which are just smaller than when i first got them. no clue what the deal is with them, if its a light thing or a flow thing.

twon8, in richmond had a clam shell like that, that was covered in zoas, and he had a pair of clown fish lay eggs on the inside of it. it was the coolest thing i've ever seen so i had to try it out.

actually, if you look closely, those are 2 different kinds of zoas. there is one kind on the top half shell, and slightly different varient of lighter pink on the bottom half shell.

the shell is a good sized derasa, over 6inches prob.

does anyone else have any pics they want to share?

Alex, about your zoas being small, I feel like when I see zoas that are wild they are very small compared to when they are in a not so well lit tank. I have the same zoas in a VHO tank and a overdriven T5 tank and I don't think most people would think that they were the same zoas. A full 3/4 " wide in one tank and almost 1/4 " wide in the T5 tank and to me different colored. :D Michael R

i had that theory also, but they are nice and wide, plump with nice skirts like on the clam shell, right under a 250w radium on an hqi ballast.

but in a small 20g tank under a 175w 15k xm on a magnetic ballast alot of them have shrunk in size.

i do have a couple of the same varieties in both tanks, and they are definitely smaller under the 175w light. but that light is also alot closer to the sand

Shivaji, I'm sorry to hear about your tanks, I know how it is to start over. Mine is just now starting to look okay.
Alex, nice idea w/ the clams, figured you had something like that in mind when asking about the shells, cool.

here's a frag of a frag of PP i got from marvin a few months ago. did you get yours from marvin too? mine looked kinda like yours at first (which is why i'm guessing it came from marvin's tank). it's still small (that's what i get for spreading it around so soon), but i'm just happy that people can't ask me 'why is it called purple pillow?' anymore...

green millie really likes the reeflux12Ks...

Matt you got the reeflux 12k too? Are yours burnt in yet? If so how do you like them? I just got my 150's bouble ended and I like them a lot but they haven't completly burnt in yet.

BTW what is that beautiful purple thing below the green Millie?

yeah, i ordered them back during the summer, but they sent the wrong ones. i ordered 175s but got 250s. ran them for a few weeks before steve noticed they were 250s and went back to the iwasakis. since i had run them for a while, i didn't feel right sending them back. underdriving bulbs can potentially mess them up. so i decided to go ahead and bump up to 250w ballasts to be able to finally run them, just got them up ~2 weeks ago or so. hopefully they are ok and not messed up from underdriving for a while. JC has the same bulbs/ballasts and says his look just like mine so i think i'm ok.

the 'purple' thing under the millie is actually a white/cream colored pipe organ that looks purple just because of the lights. are you coming to the roanoke meeting this weekend?

that green milli is really intense. is that the green milli you had for a long time that was just encrusting and hadn't really done anything? i think you called it the nuclear green milli?

ya know, normally i'd say reefs dont look good with black sand.

but yours really does look pretty cool!

i think you need to put a mantis in there ;)

thought about a mantis... they are uber-cool, but you rarely see them. I'm pretty sure it's gonna get a yellow clown goby and maybe a peppermint or camel shrimp and a ton of zoanthids... should be pretty tight. I love the balck sand, but you do not realize how much snails poo until you have black sand.

yup, this is a frag off that. it finally started growing after a while. rush got it from reefscience.

yeah i'm about ready to drop some more frags in. I'm having a small hair algae problem in there but it seems to be subsiding.

Colleen, Matt and the crew are coming by my house in Salem probably around 11:30 or 12 if you want to leave from here. It would cut out driving to Blacksburg. :D Michael R
