Pinching off branches and taking over...

Hey guys,

I'm KIND of getting back into the hobby after a few years off. I have a buddy who is setting up a tank and I've been helping him build it.

During a recent order he got a coral in which LOOKS like the one that pinches off the branches which float and take over the tank. I'm having trouble remembering if that was a leather or a soft coral.

I will try to get a picture up.

Thanks,
Ben

Not the torch... the one to the right...

Kenya Tree coral. They'll drop branches from time to time but they'll only take over a tank if the owner lets it. Just pay attention to the coral and pick up the buds, it's as simple as that.

I have seen a six foot tank totally overrun by Kenya tree but that was the intention :-)

Yes, it is a Kenya. Some don't like them because they spread so well. I like them because they do spread. You can get rid of them if you want to by just removing the babies from the tank. I have several large ones but this is my largest.

That pic is a torch coral...if it is dropping heads that is very bad...a side note, NO LPS corals self propagate that I know of, like mentioned..

There are several soft and hard corals that drop babies and chunks in the water column all the time...Kenyan most leathers, poccilipora, stylopora, 100%of all mushrooms zoa and colts will drop babies

Looks like a "pineapple tree" coral (Capnella sp.) to me, not a "Kenya tree" coral (Nepthea sp.) - Pineapple trees are usually not as "prolific" when it comes to "branchlet" dropping IME/IMO...

By "self propagate" do you mean simply asexual reproduction or referring more towards the "cutting"dropping off to regrow similar to xenias and whatnot? I was always under the impression that LPS like Acans and Torches even can all split heads? Or is cloning different than self propagation?
