pink anthias

Hey everyone,

just stopped by Petco, and bought 2 pink anthias. I couldn't see me leaving there to die. I don't know if I will keep them though, as I believe they need to be feed at least 3 times a day, and I can't see how I can do that. What do you think, keep them or let them go?

IMO you should have left them at Petco, all you managed to really do is put them on the next list of fish to come in. you buy and they'll restock. If you dont they wont have as much incentive to.

I see fish at Petco all the time, some even I woulld really like and at very good prices, but I disagree too much with their business practices (as it seems you do as well) to patron their saltwater section. $ speaks volumes

your opinion is your opinion, you are entitled to it. And you're right, I don't care to much for Petco. But as far as my taking them and them bringing in more, I have no control over that, neither do you. If I didn't buy them, trust me, there's was another guy there, who, I don't think is on ReefCentral, that was going to scoop them up. I just wanted them out of the enviroment they were in. There were a couple of others I wanted to take, but didn't. So for now, they'll just stay in my tank I guess.

And for the price I paid, I can handle the criticism that will come for buying them.

I don't believe the feed 3X theory with Anthias. I have several fat healthy ones. Evansi, Tricolor, and Squampinnis. All have been fed only in the AM for a very long time. One of the trio of Squampinninis is about finished transitioning to being the male of the harem. Absolutely fascinating to see. I feed mysis (Hikari cubes) 95% of the time.

I need to get some food for them as I was using just dried brine shrimp for my other fish. Now I just I best get some frozen

PS. When you say "pink" what species are you referring to?

If they are Tukas your only hope will be with frozen. They are very tough to acclimate, though certainly not impossible. Simple frozen Mysis would be your best bet to start them with, though if they have portions of live brine shrimp, they would help too. Good luck.

I have a single male Lyretail Anthias that I feed only once a day, usually between 6 - 8 PM. I feed twice on the weekends if I can though. I have had him for over a year, so I'm not sure that they all need to be fed 3x a day. I do feed a little on the heavy side, since I'm only feeding once a day. Good luck. HTH

I'm on the same boat.
I only feed my anthias once a day and they are fat as can be.

I believe they are one of the more hardy speces of Anthias, similar to the Lyretails. Just a little less aggressive. This is just from researching as I've never keep a Dispar, only a Lyretail. HTH

Hey JF2381,

you come by and help me get mines out and I'll do the same for you, lol. No, I WILL CATCH THEM somehow this weekend, I hope. If not, by the end of this month they have to go for sure. If anyone is interested in them, you can have them, there are 5 of them, I might keep the smallest one, seems to be the least aggressive, nah, he can go too! I'll take a leather frag for all five. Any takers?

The pic looks like very small Tukas (purple queen) to me. Though it's a little tough to tell. Are they on the small side? Like under 2 inches? Petsolutions had them for $16 apiece, and I bought some. If that's the case, my guess is that some wholesaler in the trade had a whole boatload of them and unloaded them at a really good price. They can sell for $40 each. I should have known they would be on the small side. My Evansii, immediately "herded" them into the caves, and wouldn't let them out. Too big of a size difference.

can you give me anything for them? And I'll let you know when I've caught them. My wife wants to keep them for some reason, this is after she complains about them being to aggressive. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME FIGURE THAT OUT!

I told they have to go so I can get some of the other fish I want. And maybe I get rid of just 3 and keep the small ones. But when she comes home one day, them bad boys will be GONE, LOL!
