I have had two varieties of Pink Birdnest and they sure grow slow, maybe an inh in 6 months. They look great jus slow growth compared to all me othercorals. Is this normal??

:strooper: My kids want to see this storm trooper smiley. :strooper: :strooper: :strooper: :strooper:

Mine is a slow grower too. I't grown about 1/2 inch in 6 months but to it's credit it has about 2 dozen bumps formed on it to start branches.

It depends on where the Pink birdnests comes from.
Usually from Tonga and Fiji, they are slow growers, especially those with round tip and yellow tips. But birdnests from Indonesia, those sharp tips are fast grower.

I have a sharp tip pink BN and it is the fastest growing coral in my tank. Started off with about 4 tips and about 1" tall in Jan of 06. It is now just shy of a baseball in size with several dozen tips. Great lookin coral!

how about some pics horace? I never see any pics of your tank.

About half to 1/3 of my tank is still frags so I havent really taken alot of pictures for other folks to see. Im rather modest when it comes to my tank. However, a few folks have dropped by to see it recently and given me some props so perhaps its time to start releasing more pics. I need to take some new ones first and my camera isnt the best :(.

This is the sharp tip from Indonesia.

Mine grows fairly slow considering I've had this one for about three years and it was the size of a baseball when I got it. These are hard corals to judge growth for because of the interconnecting weaving pattern that the branches grow in.

I have a very thick rounded BN anyone want to trade rounded frag for pointed frag... I know this isnt the correct forum but since the thread is here thought I might ask... sure would love to diversify.

WoW!!! :eek1: :eek1: :eek2: really good job in that !!

Thx guys...Its one of my favorites for sure. Its not super exotic by any means, but it grows fast, has great color and has a pretty awesome growth patern IMO. BN is definitely a cool coral :)

If I were to place a name on that coral -- "pink fluorescent spiky hair" :D

reminds me of Mutagen's birdnest, very thick and red, looks a bit more like Medusa's hair ... very exotic

great BN's guys!
Just a little side track if you dont mind. How much light and flow are you giving them?
I have heard very contradicting opinions about hysterix's lighting requirements.

i had a sharp branched BN, it was one of my first SPS corals. I kept it very high under a 400w MH. It was by far the fastest grower in the tank, and held stunning colouration. Sadly i lost it about 6months ago, it just started bleaching in the centre then quickly the bleaching carried its way from the inside of the colony to the tips.
i did take some frags when all else failed but they didnt survive.. Too little too late i think. Never did find out what caused this strange bleaching pattern.
