pipefish babies in bag, what should I do?

I just ordered 4 dragonfaced pipefish from LA, and 2 of the 4 bags have a couple hundred babies in them. I have 1 150gal refugium that I could put the babies in, or should I set up another tank just for them? And if so what equipment/food should I use?

Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but raising dragonfaced pipefish babies is near impossible at this time, even when attempted by experts. Few people have been successful in raising pipefish babies, and I've never heard of anyone raising dragonfaced pipes. It takes a lot of effort and time and hard work. And time. As in, you better quit your job now so you can devote all your time to these babies ;)

If it were me, I'd put them in the refuge. They have a better chance there than going into a "fry tank" and having to feed them small strain bbs and rotifers (neither of which you probably keep cultures of on-hand).

Don't worry, it's a fact of life. If you got a pair of pipes, they'll probably continue to breed and produce fry for you every month or so. Maybe you'll be better prepared next time, if you want to try again.

Thanks Molly. I did some research and came to the same conclusion you did; that the best shot would be to put them in the fuge and hope for the best. We'll see how it goes!
