Pipefish Hitchhiker

Wow! I just received some marine plants from an internet site. Imagine my surprise when I found a pipefish hitchhiker, nearly 3 inches long! I have been interested in seahorses and pipefish for some time, but have never purchased any because I am not sure I could provide the food needed. I have a 55 gallon refugium with a DSB, cheto and not a lot of flow. I guess now that I have a pipefish I will put it in the fuge and see how it does. I have no idea which species I have, but I will contact the marine plant provider and find out where they got the plants (I suspect they may be wild harvested, but who knows, maybe they grow them with pipefish?) and see if they can provide any clues as to what I may have.

Wish me luck. I just scanned the Reef Central article on keeping pipefish, so I have a few ideas of what I should be doing. If anyone has specific tips for a pipefish "newbie", feel free to pass them along.

You just never know when you might "entertain angels unaware"...

He should be fine in your tank or your refugium. Did you get him from floridapets.com? If so hes probably a gulf pipe.

Yes, I got him from florida pets. John at florida pets tells me he was no doubt wild caught and that he is probably Syngnathus floridae(Dusky pipefish). So, we will see how he does in the fuge.
