pipefish in my reef

I really like the african bluestripe pipefish, and was thinking about getting 1 for my reef, as sea horses would not live very well in 78 or so water. I have only peaceful fish in mind, and can dedicate this tank to them as it is empty of fish. I would feed them live brine, frozen mysis, and small ghost shrimp. how does this sound?

29 gallon w/ 20 gallon sump. will they get along w/
small gobys
clowns (either pink skunk, ocelaris, or perc)
cardinals or chromis
royal gramma
tail spot or lawnmower blenny

if they dont get along w/ the royal gramma I can get a smaller less aggresive fish to sustitute.

oh, and do they need something to hitch to? could I keep more than 1 kind of pipefish? I was planning on a bare bottom 10 gallon tank that I will use for QT, and was wondering what I should include in it. I am away a lot on weekends, could I drip frozen BBS into the tank? I would be feeding newly hatched. are pipefish okay w/ corals nems ect?

IME the blue lined pipe is pretty easy going and doesn't care about its tank mates too much. However, don't add two males because they will fight to the death. Also, the females appear to be hardier (anecdotally).

I would also caution you as to mixing pipe species. I had a blue line, janns, and alligator together and I added a male blue line for my female and the janns went nuts and tried to kill the new addition. I had to banish the janns to my reef to break its relentless pursuit of the blue lined pipes.

Blue lined pipes don't hitch and are fairly strong swimmers. Addition of stinging corals or anemones place pipefish at risk. That said, IME pipes come from the ocean and seem to know to avoid these things and I have never had a problem personally. But it is still a risk.

As for food, I have never got my blue lined pipes to eat anything other than pods. They live in my 55g fuge and eat to their hearts desire. These pipes are tiny and I would imagine they would have difficulty eating anything but the smallest mysis if they were interested in frozen at all. I feed my alligator live shrimp and the blue line wont have anything to do with them. I have heard some people having success feeding theirs cyclopeeze. Unless you find one that eats prepared food in a LFS you should plan on a pipe only being interested in pods, so an ample refugium is a must. If you have an appropriate environment for them to thrive, then they are easy. I have never fed my blue lined pipe ever!
